The first Battle Round of The Voice Season 30 delivered a difficult decision for Riley Green, who had to choose between soloist Brandy Neelly and sibling duo Ferryn & Brinkley Wright.
After the Blind Auditions filled all four coaches’ teams with 12 artists each, the competition quickly moved into the Battle Round. Team Riley was the first to take the stage, with Neelly facing Ferryn & Brinkley in the season’s opening battle.
For the performance, the three artists tackled Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart.” They also had the opportunity to work with Riley’s celebrity guest mentor, Carly Pearce, during rehearsals. Pearce described the song as “quirky, weird,” adding another challenge to an already competitive matchup.
Riley Green Faces a Difficult Choice
Following the performance, Riley praised all three artists and acknowledged how difficult the decision was.
He was particularly impressed by Ferryn & Brinkley’s close family bond and tight harmonies. At the same time, he praised Neelly’s performance and jokingly pointed out that she had one unusual advantage over the duo: she had previously baked his birthday cake.
“The performance was great,” Riley told the artists, recalling how impressed he had been during their acoustic rehearsal. He said he already knew the battle would be difficult because Ferryn & Brinkley had the advantage of performing as a duo while also bringing strong individual voices to the stage.
As for Neelly, Riley said she “did an awesome job with that song” and called her “a great talent,” making it clear that sending her home was not an easy decision.
Ferryn & Brinkley Wright Win the Battle
Ultimately, Riley chose Ferryn & Brinkley to advance.

The coach explained that the siblings’ combination of individual talent and tight harmonies could make them a serious threat in the competition. He also noted that they were the only duo remaining on the show, giving them a distinction that could help them stand out as the season progresses.
Riley admitted that making his first Battle Round decision was “tough,” but he believed Ferryn & Brinkley had a strong chance of surviving the upcoming Cut Week.
That meant Neelly’s journey on The Voice Season 30 came to an end after just one Battle Round appearance.
What Happens During Cut Week?

The Cut Week Riley referenced represents another major stage of the competition.
During that round, each coach will send two artists directly to the Live Shows while the remaining contestants compete in five additional battles for one final spot on their respective teams.
Once the Top 12 are determined, viewers will have another opportunity to influence the competition, with America voting for one additional artist to join the Live Shows and create a Top 13.
