Florence Pugh Lands Lead Role In The Midnight Library Adaptation

Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames in East of Eden

Florence Pugh is taking on another ambitious literary adaptation, with the Oscar-nominated actress set to star in The Midnight Library, based on Matt Haig’s bestselling 2020 novel. Pugh will play Nora Seed, a woman who discovers a mysterious library containing countless versions of her life, each shaped by the choices she could have made differently.

The project will reunite Pugh with Garth Davis, who directed her in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. With a major creative team now attached, the long-awaited film is finally moving closer to production after spending years in development.

Florence Pugh Takes on Matt Haig’s Bestselling Novel

The Midnight Library follows Nora Seed, who believes her life has gone wrong after losing her job, experiencing strained relationships, and watching her ambitions fade. After attempting suicide, she finds herself in a mysterious library situated between life and death.

Every book in the library represents a different version of Nora’s life, allowing her to explore what might have happened if she had made different decisions. With guidance from Mrs. Elm, her former school librarian, Nora can revisit paths she once abandoned and experience the possibilities that might have unfolded.

What if she had stayed with her fiancé? What if she had continued making music with her brother’s band? Or what if she had pursued her childhood dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer?

As Nora moves between these alternate realities, she discovers that even the lives she once imagined as perfect come with unexpected complications. Professional success does not necessarily bring happiness, fame cannot guarantee fulfillment, and seemingly ideal relationships have their own difficulties.

Rather than simply celebrating the idea of endless possibilities, the story examines regret, missed opportunities, and the struggle to find meaning in an imperfect life. Nora’s journey ultimately challenges her belief that different choices would automatically have made everything better.

A Major Creative Team Comes Together

After Netflix's 'East of Eden,' Florence Pugh Will Lead a Long-Awaited Fantasy Adaptation

StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures acquired the rights to Haig’s novel in 2020, but the adaptation is only now revealing its cast and creative team.

Pugh will not only star as Nora but also serve as a producer alongside Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Anita Overland. Laura Wade and Nick Payne are writing the screenplay, while Davis will direct.

Wade is known for writing the stage play Posh, which inspired the film The Riot Club, and for her work on the television adaptation of Rivals. Payne’s screenwriting credits include The Sense of an Ending and We Live in Time.

The writers face a particular challenge in translating Haig’s introspective novel into a cinematic experience. Because much of Nora’s struggle takes place within her own mind, the adaptation must make her emotional journey compelling without turning the story into a simple collection of alternate realities or lessons about appreciating what one already has.

Haig is also attached as an executive producer and has expressed enthusiasm about the team bringing Nora’s story to the screen.

Pre-production is expected to begin in fall 2026, marking a significant step forward for a project that has spent six years in development.

Florence Pugh Reunites With East of Eden Director

The Midnight Library will mark another collaboration between Pugh and Davis, who are already working together on Netflix’s adaptation of East of Eden.

Pugh is set to portray Cathy Ames in the Steinbeck adaptation, a very different character from Nora Seed. While East of Eden explores complex family relationships and morally complicated characters, The Midnight Library centers on a woman questioning the direction of her own life.

As Nora, Pugh will need to portray a character who remains emotionally recognizable while moving through dramatically different circumstances, relationships, and achievements. Each alternate life changes her surroundings, but the central conflict remains the same: Nora’s conviction that she has somehow made all the wrong choices.

Davis, whose previous work includes Lion, will need to balance the novel’s fantastical premise with the emotional realism that makes Nora’s story resonate.

Their existing working relationship could prove valuable as they tackle a narrative that depends less on a conventional antagonist and more on the evolving perspective of its central character.

Why The Midnight Library Became a Global Bestseller

After Netflix's 'East of Eden,' Florence Pugh Will Lead a Long-Awaited Fantasy Adaptation

Since its publication in 2020, Haig’s novel has sold more than 15 million copies, connecting with readers through a question many people have considered at some point: What if I had made different choices?

The book uses its multiverse-inspired premise to explore the emotional consequences of regret. Rather than suggesting that there is one perfect life waiting to be discovered, it reveals how every path comes with its own sacrifices and disappointments.

Nora’s imagined alternatives range from performing onstage to conducting research in the Arctic, giving the adaptation opportunities to explore dramatically different environments and lifestyles.

However, the film’s success may depend on how effectively it keeps Nora’s emotional transformation at the center of these changing worlds. If the alternate lives become little more than a series of visual spectacles, the deeper message could get lost. Each experience needs to change Nora’s understanding of herself and help her confront the assumptions she has made about her past.

The challenge is to preserve the sense of wonder that makes the library fascinating while maintaining the intimate human story at its core.

Can the Film Capture the Novel’s Emotional Impact?

With Pugh leading the cast and Davis directing, The Midnight Library has assembled a team capable of tackling its demanding central role and unconventional structure.

The adaptation will need to balance fantasy, emotional drama, and the consequences of life’s choices without oversimplifying the novel’s message. Nora’s journey is not simply about discovering that other lives can be disappointing; it is about learning to reconsider the life she still has the opportunity to live.

Netflix Adaptation's Major Changes To 74-Year-Old Novel Explained By Florence Pugh

After years in development, the film is finally approaching its next stage, with pre-production expected to begin in fall 2026. No release date has been announced.

For fans of Haig’s bestselling novel, the biggest question is whether Pugh and Davis can transform Nora’s deeply personal journey into a cinematic experience that preserves the book’s emotional heart while bringing its many possible lives vividly to the screen.
