Long before becoming a television icon on CBS’s NCIS, actor Mark Harmon made a single, daring phone call that completely altered the course of his personal life. Unlike his onscreen persona, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who went through four turbulent marriages, Harmon has spent decades happily married to fellow actor Pam Dawber.
The couple’s love story began in 1986 when a mutual friend proposed organizing a group date to introduce them. Deciding to skip the group dynamic entirely, Harmon asked for Dawber’s phone number so he could reach out directly. Dawber answered the cold call, and after a brief conversation, she agreed to go on a private date with him. The connection was immediate, and the pair officially married in 1987.
Both stars were prominent figures in the entertainment industry at the time. Harmon had built a strong television presence through series like St. Elsewhere and Reasonable Doubts, while Dawber was widely recognized for her starring roles in Mork & Mindy alongside Robin Williams and the sitcom My Sister Sam.

Before meeting Dawber, Harmon openly expressed his desire to defy traditional Hollywood marriage trends. Reflecting on commitment in 1986, he noted that he was naturally monogamous and wanted a lasting union that defied the industry’s high divorce rates. Dawber echoed those feelings in 1987, praising Harmon as fabulous as they prepared to move in together.
Decades later, Harmon attributed the longevity of their marriage to maturity, noting in 2019 that both were in their thirties when they wed, allowing them to learn from earlier life experiences. The couple has also maintained a strong commitment to privacy, choosing to keep the details of their relationship out of the media spotlight to protect their bond. Together, they have raised two sons.

The duo even shared the screen during Season 18 of NCIS, where Dawber appeared alongside Harmon for a few episodes shortly before he wrapped up his iconic run on the long-running series.
