Kayleigh Mathews gave The Voice coaches a performance they will not soon forget.
During the latest Blind Audition, the 31-year-old Grand Ole Opry tour guide took on Vince Gill’s When I Call Your Name and delivered a performance strong enough to turn every coach’s chair.
Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green, Queen Latifah and Adam Levine all wanted Mathews on their teams, setting up one of the biggest battles for a contestant this season.

Levine immediately made it clear that he was ready to fight for her.
“I am going to fight as hard as I have ever fought for you right now,” he told Mathews, arguing that his team could give her a different path despite his lack of country artists.
“You are such a magnificent talent. I would be honored to be your coach,” Levine added.
The Voice coaches praise Kayleigh Mathews

Queen Latifah explained why she turned her chair for Mathews, saying the singer deserved to receive a four-chair turn.
“That was absolutely gorgeous. You took me to church,” Queen Latifah said. “It became a spiritual moment for me.”
She also promised to help Mathews find songs that would bring out the full beauty of her voice.
Green was equally impressed, especially because Mathews had taken on one of country music’s biggest vocalists.
“To take on Vince Gill, who’s one of the greatest vocalists in country music, those are big shoes to fill, and you really did it,” Green said.
The performance also reminded Green of growing up in Alabama.
“Literally, I closed my eyes and I was back home,” he said. “I’m a long way from home, so thank you for that on top of everything.”
Clarkson then revealed that she was already a fan of Mathews before comparing her voice to Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes.
“You have a musical baby of several female singers that I love,” Clarkson said.
She also mentioned her own connection to Gill, revealing that she had previously performed a duet with the country legend.
“I come back because of voices like yours. I like to be moved,” Clarkson told Mathews.

Riley Green and Adam Levine turn the audition into a comedy battle
The competition took an unexpected turn when Levine tried to make another pitch for Mathews.
Green was not having it.
The country singer asked producers to bring out a duck blind to block Levine from view, jokingly taking him out of the competition.
“You really think resorting to this kind of thing is classy?” Levine asked as he stepped out from behind his chair.
Green then explained just how badly he wanted Mathews on his team.
“This shows how much I want you on my team,” he said before pointing at the duck blind. “During the break, Adam was peeing and I built this.”
Levine fired back by sitting in Green’s chair and telling Mathews that both coaches might have ruined their chances.
“We love you. I love you the most,” Levine joked. “I think we’re both not in this anymore. Riley, I think we’ve destroyed our chances.”
In the end, Levine was right about one thing. Neither of them won Mathews.
Kayleigh Mathews chooses Queen Latifah
After hearing from all four coaches, Mathews made her decision.
“I’ve got to go with my heart and my gut and what I know, and I would love the opportunity to work with Queen Latifah,” she said.
Queen Latifah was visibly shocked by the announcement.
After winning the four-chair turn, Queen Latifah said she was excited to work with a country singer but believed Mathews could go far beyond one genre.
“She’s beyond country,” Queen Latifah explained. “Country is also soul, rhythm, blues. Who knows where she wants to fly?”

Mathews said her decision was based on more than Queen Latifah’s experience as a musician.
“Not only is she an amazing actress as well as musician, I can tell genuinely she’s an amazing human being,” she said. “I’m sorry, I was not going to choose one of the boys.”
With that, Mathews became the latest standout singer to join Team Queen, while Green and Levine were left wondering what they could have done differently to win her over.
The Voice airs Mondays on NBC.
