Season 4 Is the Endgame
Showrunner Ryan Condal has been clear from the start: the series was designed as a four-season story. Speaking at a June 2026 press conference, he explained: “This is a four-season show. You have to wait two years in between each chapter. But, ultimately, this is one story.”
That means Season 4 will bring the Dance of the Dragons to its bloody conclusion, aligning with George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Production Timeline
- Writing: Condal confirmed he is already working on scripts.
- Filming: Production is expected to begin in spring 2027, timed to fit the British summer filming schedule.
- Release: Following the show’s two-year cycle (Seasons 1 in 2022, 2 in 2024, 3 in 2026), Season 4 is slated for 2028, likely in the summer.
What to Expect
While HBO has not released an official synopsis, Condal promised Season 4 will be “the biggest season we have made, for sure.” Considering Season 3’s Battle of the Gullet was described as “unlike anything that’s ever been done in television,” expectations are high for even larger-scale battles and emotional payoffs.
Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, hinted that grief will fuel her ambition in the final season: “There’s a nice journey we see Rhaenyra go on… by Season 3, some of her self-doubt has dropped away, for better or worse.”
