Netflix is expanding the Bridgerton universe with a new prequel centered on Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The upcoming limited series will explore the early life of the beloved family matriarch, played by Ruth Gemmell in the flagship drama.
Netflix officially announced the untitled spinoff on Thursday, October 8, 2026, describing it as a project similar in concept to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the 2023 prequel that explored the monarch’s younger years and her relationship with King George.
“Similar to the massive global hit Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the series will chronicle the early life of a young Lady Violet and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton,” Netflix said in its announcement.
Shondaland celebrated the news with a message written in the familiar voice of Lady Whistledown, teasing the love story that helped shape the Bridgerton family.
“The love match that started it all shall soon be yours to see, dear reader,” the message read. “This author shall be sure to inform you of any updates. Until then… Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown.”
Shonda Rhimes Returns to the Bridgerton Universe
Shonda Rhimes, who will serve as co-writer and showrunner alongside Nicholas Nardini, had previously hinted that Violet could be the focus of another Bridgerton spinoff.
During a March appearance on Craig Melvin’s Glass Half Full podcast, Rhimes explained that the family matriarch had long been on her mind as a potential subject for a prequel.
“I’ve always said that I thought, if we were going to do anotherspinoffanother spinoff, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about, the Bridgerton mom,” Rhimes said. “So, yeah, that’s a possibility.”
The official announcement now confirms that the idea is moving forward, although Netflix has not yet revealed a title or additional casting details for the limited series.

Although Gemmell portrays Violet in the main series, viewers have already caught a brief glimpse of her childhood in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
Connie Jenkins-Greig played Violet at age 12 in the prequel, which also introduced her parents, Lord Ledger, played by Keir Charles, and Lady Ledger, played by Katie Brayben. The series additionally hinted at a possible romance between Lord Ledger and a young Lady Danbury, portrayed by Arsema Thomas.

The new spinoff will shift its focus to a later chapter in Violet’s life, examining her romance with Edmund and the relationship that ultimately led to the large Bridgerton family audiences know from the original series.
Golda Rosheuvel Previously Called for More Character Prequels
Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte, previously expressed interest in seeing the franchise explore other characters’ origins rather than immediately returning to the monarch’s story.
“I don’t know personally whether I want another Queen Charlotte spinoff,” Rosheuvel told PEOPLE earlier this year. “I’d like another character’s spinoff. I think there’s a lot of scope to delve into other characters’ prequel origin stories.”

With Violet now confirmed as the focus of the next prequel, the franchise will have an opportunity to explore a central character whose family relationships and romantic history have shaped much of the main series.
All four seasons of Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story are currently streaming on Netflix. Further details about the Violet-focused limited series have yet to be announced.
