Bridgerton has given viewers a wedding or a marriage between its central couple in every season so far, with each romance overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles along the way. But when Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) take center stage, the Netflix drama could approach its traditional happy ending in a very different way.
As the series prepares to explore its first same-sex leading romance, questions remain about how Francesca and Michaela could build a life together in the show’s Regency-era society. While a wedding may still be possible, their path to happiness could involve a complicated arrangement rather than a conventional marriage.
Why Francesca and Michaela May Not Have a Legal Wedding
There is little reason to doubt that Francesca and Michaela will receive the romantic happy ending associated with Bridgerton. However, the series’ decision to change Michaela’s gender from the character’s original counterpart in Julia Quinn’s novels creates new challenges for their eventual union.
In When He Was Wicked, Francesca ultimately marries her late husband John’s male cousin. The television adaptation, however, must find a different way to resolve the couple’s relationship while remaining consistent with the fictional world’s social and legal structures.
Although Bridgerton takes considerable liberties with historical accuracy, the series has not established a society in which same-sex marriage is legally recognized. Previous conversations involving Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and artist Henry Granville (Julian Ovenden) have also suggested that openly queer relationships face significant restrictions.
Could Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) intervene and change the laws to allow Francesca and Michaela to marry? It is theoretically possible, but such a major political and social shift would be a substantial storyline to introduce within a single season.

For that reason, a legal marriage between the two women may be unlikely in Season 5.
One alternative would be a symbolic ceremony, allowing Francesca and Michaela to commit to each other privately while presenting themselves publicly as close friends or companions. Such an arrangement could give them a shared life without requiring the show to rewrite the legal framework of its fictional society.
However, another possibility may be even more compelling.
Could a Lavender Marriage Be the Answer?
A lavender marriage — a marriage between a man and a woman undertaken partly to conceal one or both partners’ queer identities — could offer Francesca and Michaela a way to navigate the restrictions of their society.
Under this theory, either woman could marry a man for practical reasons while continuing her romantic relationship with the other. Such an arrangement could protect their reputations and allow them to pursue happiness within the limits imposed by the world around them.
The question of inheritance provides a potential reason for this development.

Season 4 revealed that Francesca was not carrying an heir to her late husband John Kilmartin (Victor Alli). That detail raises questions about the future of the Kilmartin estate and earldom, making succession a possible source of conflict in the next season.
Netflix has also indicated that Francesca will return to the marriage mart, as she does in the books. This creates an opportunity for the series to introduce a marriage that serves a practical purpose rather than a romantic one.
Although either Francesca or Michaela could theoretically enter such an arrangement, Francesca appears to be the more likely candidate given her established connection to the Kilmartin family and its inheritance concerns.
Could Christopher Anderson Become Francesca’s Husband?
If Francesca must marry a man to protect the family’s position, the ideal candidate would likely be someone who understands her circumstances and has little interest in a conventional romantic marriage himself.
A man who is also queer, or who simply prefers a marriage of convenience, could potentially give Francesca the freedom to remain with Michaela while fulfilling the expectations placed upon her.
One possible candidate is Christopher Anderson (Tega Alexander), the son of Lord Marcus Anderson and a new addition to Season 5.
A marriage between Christopher and Francesca could provide a mutually beneficial solution if both characters understood what the arrangement required. It could also connect to another important aspect of Francesca’s storyline: her desire to have a child.
In the source material, motherhood is a significant part of Francesca’s journey. A marriage that allows her to pursue that dream while maintaining her relationship with Michaela could offer the adaptation a way to preserve some of the original story’s emotional stakes without following the books exactly.
For now, however, Christopher’s potential role in Francesca’s future remains speculation rather than confirmed plot information.
Jess Brownell Promises a Happy Ending for Francesca and Michaela
Whatever direction the series takes, showrunner Jess Brownell has made it clear that Francesca and Michaela’s story will ultimately celebrate queer love rather than focus solely on suffering.

Speaking to Shondaland, Brownell described the upcoming romance as a story about queer joy, while acknowledging that the characters will still face obstacles.
“The love is at the very center of the story,” she explained. Brownell added that framing the season around queer joy does not mean its characters will be free from difficulties.
“Ultimately, they will prevail and have a happy ending,” she promised.
The showrunner also emphasized that removing every obstacle would deprive the characters of agency and weaken the emotional impact of their eventual happiness. Like the couples who came before them, Francesca and Michaela must earn their ending through the challenges they face.
That reassurance suggests the series intends to preserve the romantic optimism that has defined Bridgerton, even if the route to a happy ending looks different this time.
Whether Francesca and Michaela exchange vows in a symbolic ceremony, enter a lavender marriage arrangement or find another way to build their future together, their relationship is poised to challenge the expectations of their society.
A conventional legal wedding may not be the most likely outcome under the rules currently established by the show. But if Brownell’s promise holds true, Francesca and Michaela’s story will ultimately be about finding a way to choose each other — whatever compromises that journey requires.
