Warning: Spoilers ahead for Season 2, Episode 4 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Although Outlander has reached its conclusion, its prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is still finding ways to deliver devastating emotional moments. In Season 2, Episode 4, a heartbreaking revelation involving Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia Beauchamp, threatens the very hope that has kept them going.
After being separated at the standing stones, Henry and Julia are finally reunited. However, their reunion takes a painful turn when Julia asks Henry about their daughter, Claire, only to discover that he no longer remembers her.
The revelation is devastating because finding Claire was the central goal that brought the couple through their ordeal. Henry managed to return to his own time, but he could not accomplish the one thing they both desperately wanted: reuniting with their daughter.
Despite her heartbreak, Julia refuses to let the revelation destroy her relationship with Henry. Actress Hermione Corfield, who portrays Julia, discussed the emotional complexity of the scene and why her character chooses to keep moving forward despite everything she has endured.
Hermione Corfield Explains Julia’s Painful Dilemma
Speaking about the scene, Corfield described Julia’s struggle to balance her feelings of hurt with her understanding of what Henry has experienced.
“I think for me, that scene, the thing I had to take from that scene was that Julia, you know, it’s a balancing act for her,” the actress explained.
Julia has not fully forgiven Henry for everything that has happened between them. However, she recognizes that he is trying, and the looming war forces her to reconsider how much time they have left together.
As Corfield explained, Julia must set aside some of her pain to reconnect with her husband because she cannot be certain she will not lose him.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts also emphasized the importance of Julia’s understanding of Henry’s psychological struggles. She knows about his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the mental health challenges he has faced.
After learning that Henry underwent electroshock therapy following his time travel through the stones, Julia begins to understand why his memories have been affected. Nevertheless, her initial reaction remains one of disbelief: How could he possibly forget their daughter?
Forgetting Claire Is the Couple’s Most Devastating Blow

For Julia, Henry’s inability to remember Claire is particularly painful because their daughter represents the hope they have shared throughout their journey.
Corfield explained that finding their way home and reaching Claire had given the couple a common purpose, helping them stay focused and keep going despite the obstacles in their path.
“But I think the Claire moment is probably the worst, most painful moment for her in that scene because that’s been their shared hope,” she said.
She continued by explaining that when the one other person who knows Claire and loves her as deeply as Julia does can no longer remember their daughter, the emotional impact is overwhelming.
“I think it’s the worst feeling in the world,” Corfield added.
The revelation becomes even more complicated as Julia learns about Henry’s experiences during his time away, including what happened with Seema. Although she is understandably hurt, she listens as Henry explains that his memories of Claire were tied to his deepest emotional pain.
Rather than immediately turning away from him, Julia begins to process what she has learned and considers how they might rebuild their relationship.
Matthew B. Roberts Praises the Emotional Performance

Roberts praised Corfield’s portrayal of Julia as she navigates the conflicting emotions of love, grief, anger and understanding.
The showrunner highlighted how the couple’s deep devotion to each other emerges even in a scene filled with painful revelations.
“You watch her process that, and she, you know, they have such a devout love for each other, that you can see that kind of spill out in that room,” Roberts said.
He added that scenes featuring two characters working through complicated emotions together can be among the most challenging and rewarding moments to film.
The episode captures that complexity through Julia’s reaction to Henry’s memory loss. She is devastated by what he has forgotten, but she also recognizes the suffering that may have caused him to lose those memories in the first place.
Her decision to move forward does not mean the pain has disappeared. Instead, it reflects her determination to preserve their relationship despite the circumstances threatening to tear them apart.
What Happens Next for Henry and Julia?

As Henry prepares to go off to war, Julia gives him a new task: find the man he used to be so that they can move forward together.
The heartbreaking revelation leaves the couple facing another difficult chapter. Their shared mission to find Claire has been shaken, and Henry must confront the consequences of what he has endured while Julia decides how to support him without ignoring her own hurt.
Whether Henry can recover a sense of himself—and whether the couple can eventually find their way back to Claire—remains a central question as the season continues.
