Country star Riley Green wasted no time making his mark as a new coach on The Voice Season 30, turning his chair for two singers from his home state of Alabama and quickly building a strong Team Riley.

Green brought plenty of energy to his first night, even using his duck-call skills while joking with longtime coach Adam Levine during the battle for contestant Big Country. Levine teased Green about bringing duck calls to the show, while Green fired back with a joke of his own, calling Levine “Little City.”

Big Country ultimately chose Queen Latifah, but the next singer immediately caught Green’s attention.

Nineteen-year-old Joe Henley from Grand Bay, Alabama, introduced himself as being from “L.A. — Lower Alabama” and made it clear before his audition that he was excited to see Green join the coaching lineup.

Henley had little performance experience outside of church and campfire singing, but his version of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” quickly changed that. His deep country voice impressed both Green and Kelly Clarkson, who hit their buttons and spun their chairs almost at the same time.

The connection between Green and Henley was obvious from the start. Clarkson even tried to block Green from Henley’s view as she made her pitch.

“Let’s just talk like it’s just me and you here,” Green joked.

But Green had another move ready. He stepped onto the stage and joined Henley for an unexpected performance of his own song “My Way.” Clarkson could only react, “Well, damn,” as the country connection between the two became even clearer.

Green later explained that he wanted to build a team filled with country singers, but he also offered advice to contestants he did not choose. Sharing part of his own journey, he revealed that he did not land a record deal until he was 30 and had heard plenty of “nos” before finally getting a “yes.”

Green also found another Alabama singer later in the premiere.

Twenty-five-year-old Caroline Alexis from Ozark performed Rascal Flatts’ “Take Me There.” Green was the only coach to turn for her, praising her recognizable Alabama accent, tone, song choice and performance.

Alexis also revealed that she had recently earned a law degree and was studying for the bar exam during her time backstage. Green turned the moment into another joke, saying the two had something in common because he also goes to “the bar” during his downtime.

With two Alabama singers already on his team, Green appeared confident about his start as a Voice coach.

“Team Riley is the team to beat,” he declared.

Clarkson, meanwhile, was already getting tired of hearing about it.

“Riley Green is killing it,” she joked. “I’m a little over it.”

The Voice Season 30 continues with more Blind Auditions Tuesday and Wednesday on NBC, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.
