Authorities Review Viral Video After Alleged Argument Before Nolan Wells Disappeared on Horn Island
Investigators are examining a video circulating online that reportedly shows a heated confrontation on Horn Island shortly before Mississippi teenager Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boat outing.
The 18 year old football player went missing Saturday after spending the holiday with friends on the barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. A body believed to be Wells was discovered Monday morning, ending a widespread search that involved multiple agencies and volunteers.
According to authorities, Wells was last seen around 3 p.m. on July 4 near the northern end of Horn Island. Officials previously said he was reportedly talking with a girl before he vanished.
The newly circulated video has drawn attention online because it appears to show several people involved in a tense exchange near the shoreline with boats nearby. Some social media users have questioned whether the footage could be connected to Wells’ disappearance.
However, investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the video or determined whether the people shown in the clip had any involvement in what happened to Wells.
John Ledbetter said authorities are aware of the footage and are reviewing all available information as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to Ledbetter, Wells’ friends eventually left the island and returned without him because he had decided to stay behind.
Authorities are now asking anyone who was on Horn Island that day and witnessed an argument, unusual behavior or any suspicious activity to come forward with firsthand information.
Wells’ family continues to search for answers following the heartbreaking discovery. His grandfather, Christopher Wells Sr., expressed frustration and disbelief over the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
“There’s nothing right about this,” he wrote in a social media post, questioning how Wells’ body was found after the island had already been searched.
The grieving family said they had hoped for a different outcome but understood they needed to prepare for the possibility of losing him.

Wells, who stood 6 foot 1 and weighed around 180 pounds, was remembered by loved ones as a talented athlete and a caring young man. Photos shared before his disappearance showed him enjoying the holiday with friends on a boat, smiling and wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses.
The search effort included assistance from the United Cajun Navy, the United States Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and local law enforcement agencies.
Wells was a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College after previously playing football at Ocean Springs High School. Coaches and teammates have described him as someone who stood out not only because of his athletic ability but also because of his character.
As investigators continue reviewing evidence, officials have not announced a final cause of death or provided additional details about what happened during Wells’ final hours on Horn Island.
