Cajun Navy volunteer says dangerous “washing machine” currents near Horn Island may hold clues in Nolan Wells case

A leader with the United Cajun Navy is shedding more light on the dangerous waters surrounding Mississippi’s Horn Island, saying the area where Nolan Wells was found is infamous among locals for powerful currents known as the “washing machine.”

The comments come as investigators continue trying to determine what happened to the 18 year old after he disappeared during a Fourth of July trip with friends.

Wells vanished on July 4 after traveling by boat to Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. His body was discovered two days later, on July 6, near the island’s northwestern tip by a National Park Service ranger after an extensive search.

Authorities have said Wells’ friends returned to the mainland that afternoon without him. According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, investigators believe the teenager chose to remain on the island. His family did not learn he was missing until later that evening, when one of his friends contacted his mother, who then alerted authorities.

United Cajun Navy Vice President Brian Trascher described the waters between Horn Island and nearby Ship Island as one of the most dangerous areas along the coast.

“There is some kind of nickname for it,” Trascher said. “They’ve had a lot of drownings in that area and on that island. Between those two islands there’s a strong divergent occurrence. That area is called the washing machine by locals.”

According to Trascher, conversations with people who were on Horn Island that day suggested the rip current was especially powerful on July 4. He also noted that the water near the island’s northwest shoreline changes depth rapidly, making conditions even more hazardous.

Although Wells was known to be a strong swimmer, Trascher said even experienced swimmers can quickly lose control in severe rip currents, particularly if exhaustion, alcohol, or prolonged exposure to the sun become factors.

Despite the dangerous conditions, Trascher believes one of the biggest mysteries remains the unexplained gap in Wells’ final known movements.

The last confirmed sighting of the college football player was reportedly around 4 or 4:30 p.m. on July 4. After that, there are no confirmed eyewitness accounts, photos, or videos showing where he went before his body was recovered nearly two days later.

“I’ve heard virtually no explanation,” Trascher said. “Nobody seemed to see him after that. There don’t seem to be any photographs or videos of him after that time. So what happened? It wasn’t dark yet. There were still a lot of people on the island. Why did he just vanish and show up dead two days later?”

He emphasized that those unanswered questions should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of foul play.

“I’m not suggesting that means there was foul play involved,” he added. “I’m just saying there is a gaping hole in the story that needs to be filled.”

The latest comments come as Wells’ family continues pursuing answers through an independent investigation led by civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

During a recent news conference, Crump revealed that forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell identified an area of unexplained red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head during an independent autopsy. However, Mitchell concluded that both the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further investigation. The official autopsy has also not yet reached a final conclusion.

We also asked veteran forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden about the reported head injury. Baden said the finding alone does not necessarily point to foul play.

“That could be from bumping into something in the water,” Baden explained. “There’s a lot of debris in the water, for example. It depends how deep it is, but it’s describing a really superficial impact that could have happened before death or after death.”

He added that the injury could be “totally innocent” based on the limited information currently available.

Even so, Mitchell wrote in his preliminary report that, because important evidence remains unavailable, he could not rule out the possibility that non accidental factors contributed to or caused Wells’ death.

As investigators continue reviewing evidence, the timeline between Wells’ last confirmed sighting and the discovery of his body remains one of the central unanswered questions in the ongoing investigation.
