The effort to uncover what happened to Nolan Wells has gained another high-profile supporter, as Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens has contributed $25,000 to the reward fund tied to the ongoing investigation into the 18-year-old college student’s death.

According to a Tuesday, July 21 news release obtained by PEOPLE, attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Wells’ family, announced that Owens’ donation raises the total reward to $125,000. The money is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in connection with Wells’ death.

Owens joins Rev. Al Sharpton and filmmaker Tyler Perry, who each previously donated $50,000 to the reward fund. Crump praised the trio for standing behind the Wells family as they continue seeking answers.

“We are deeply grateful to Terrell Owens, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Tyler Perry for standing with Nolan Wells’ family in their pursuit of truth and justice,” Crump said. “Their generosity and unwavering support send a powerful message that this tragedy will not be swept under the rug and that we will not stop until the truth is uncovered and justice is served.”

Nolan Wells, a football player, disappeared after traveling with a group of friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, during a Fourth of July celebration. He was reported missing just hours after arriving on the island, and his body was discovered on the island’s northwest end two days later.

Investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened during Wells’ final hours. Although numerous people reportedly attended the gathering that day, key questions remain unanswered. There have also been conflicting accounts about whether Wells intended to remain on the island after his friends reportedly had to leave because of problems with their boat.

Witnesses described the holiday gathering as a large, lively event attended by hundreds of people. Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have said it would have been highly unusual for their son to separate from his friends, particularly because he did not have his phone with him.

Both the official investigation and an independent review remain ongoing. While the official autopsy is still pending, the results of an independent autopsy were expected to be released Wednesday. Authorities have suggested that Wells may have drowned, but his family has disputed that speculation and continues to urge the public not to draw conclusions before all evidence has been examined.

On Monday, July 20, family and friends gathered at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to celebrate Wells’ life. During the funeral, Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy and announced his $50,000 contribution to the reward fund. Tyler Perry, who also helped pay for Wells’ memorial service, immediately matched Sharpton’s donation.

Following Owens’ contribution, Crump renewed his appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

“Someone knows what happened to Nolan on Horn Island,” Crump said. “We urge anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward. This reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction because Nolan’s family deserves the truth, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
