The Wolf King Could Be Starz’s Next Outlander-Sized Hit With Romance, Political Intrigue and a Love Triangle

Review of fantasy romance book The Wolf KingWith Outlander having concluded its eight-season run, fans may be wondering which series could deliver the same mix of sweeping romance, historical drama and breathtaking Scottish landscapes. Starz appears to have an answer in development: an adaptation of Lauren Palphreyman’s romantasy hit The Wolf King, a story featuring forbidden attraction, dangerous political alliances and, of course, werewolves.

The original series built much of Starz’s identity around the enduring love story of Jamie and Claire Fraser, played by Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. Although the prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood continues to explore the franchise’s world through the stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents, the network is also looking toward a new romantic fantasy universe.

What Is The Wolf King About?

The Wolf King Adaptation in Development at Starz

A popular title among BookTok readers and romantasy fans, The Wolf King follows Aurora, a princess whose arranged marriage is intended to strengthen her father’s political alliance. But the night before the wedding, she is forced to watch a brutal spectacle: captured werewolves fighting to the death for entertainment.

When a young wolf named Ryan is selected to face a powerful alpha, Aurora intervenes and saves him. Her decision sets off a chain of events that changes her future.

Her actions attract the attention of Callum, the alpha who was supposed to fight Ryan. After escaping the castle, Callum kidnaps Aurora and takes her north of the border, where wolf clans are beginning to unite into a force resembling an army.

Aurora soon finds herself caught in the middle of a growing supernatural conflict. At the same time, her feelings become increasingly complicated as she develops an attraction to Callum, who claims he wants to help her gain her freedom, and Blake, a morally ambiguous wolf whose true intentions are harder to understand.

The resulting love triangle adds another layer to a story already filled with political tension, shifting loyalties and supernatural danger.

Why It Could Appeal to Outlander Fans

Although The Wolf King moves further into fantasy than Outlander, the two stories share several elements that could make the adaptation appealing to the same audience.

Both feature strong female protagonists navigating dangerous political environments, complicated romantic relationships and worlds shaped by historical settings and clan rivalries. The Scottish landscape also plays an important role in the atmosphere of Palphreyman’s story, offering opportunities for the sweeping scenery that helped make Outlander visually distinctive.

There is also a supernatural dimension. Outlander incorporated mysterious time travel from the beginning and later explored Claire’s unusual healing abilities, while The Wolf King places werewolf mythology at the center of its conflict.

The book has also drawn comparisons to Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses, particularly because of its romantic tension, enemies-to-lovers dynamics and complicated love triangle. Its blend of fantasy, political intrigue and steamy romance gives Starz plenty of material to explore.

Could The Wolf King Become Starz’s Next Multi-Season Hit?

The adaptation has the advantage of an existing literary series. The Wolf King is the first book in a trilogy by Lauren Palphreyman. Its sequel, The Night Prince, was released in 2025, while the final installment, The Wolf Queen, is scheduled for publication next year.

That gives showrunner Tanya Saracho, known for Vida, a larger story to draw from than a standalone novel would provide. The books also introduce multiple characters, supernatural factions and political conflicts that could support an extended television adaptation.

The possibility of several seasons or even interconnected spin-offs remains speculative, but the source material offers room for the franchise to expand if the series finds an audience.

For Starz, the project represents an opportunity to build another fantasy romance around the elements that made Outlander such a defining series for the network. This time, however, the love story comes with wolf clans, supernatural warfare and a heroine whose decision to save one captured wolf changes everything.
