Simon Cowell Warns AGT Family Band That Their Biggest Strength Could Send Them Home

The Sound auditions for 'America's Got Talent' 2026

A family country trio known as The Sound earned one of the warmest audience reactions during the latest round of America’s Got Talent auditions, but Simon Cowell believes the group will need to take bigger creative risks if they hope to advance deep into the competition.

The trio, made up of a father and his two sons from Romeo, Michigan, has performed together for years. During their introduction, the family explained that the brothers grew up making music alongside their father, creating the close vocal chemistry that became the centerpiece of their audition.

For their performance, The Sound selected “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” one of the best-known songs in American music.

Originally written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver, the song was released by John Denver in 1971 as the lead single from his album Poems, Prayers & Promises. Blending folk, country, and soft rock influences, the song became Denver’s signature hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the years, it has remained a cultural favorite, celebrated for its nostalgic lyrics about home and belonging, and has been covered by artists across a wide range of musical styles.

Rather than immediately launching into a full-band performance, The Sound opened with an a cappella arrangement. They encouraged the audience to clap along to establish the rhythm before showcasing their three-part harmonies without instrumental accompaniment. Once the harmonies had been established, the trio added guitars and bass, transforming the performance into a polished country rendition while maintaining the song’s warm, familiar atmosphere.

Simon Cowell Calls 'AGT' Country Trio Audition "Very Safe"

The arrangement highlighted the group’s greatest strength: their vocal blend. Years of performing together were evident in the precision of their harmonies, allowing the family to create a smooth, balanced sound throughout the performance.

The audience responded enthusiastically, cheering as the song progressed and eventually giving the trio a standing ovation. Near the end of the performance, judges Mel B and Sofia Vergara briefly believed the song had concluded and stood to applaud, only to discover that The Sound had planned one final a cappella section before finishing.

The unexpected ending added a memorable touch and demonstrated the group’s confidence in returning to pure vocal harmonies after the instrumental portion.

Mel B was particularly enthusiastic during the judges’ comments. Although she admitted country music is not usually her preferred genre, she praised the trio for winning her over, describing their harmonies as “perfection.” She also shared a lighthearted moment by joking that the father had intentionally chosen the coolest instrument in the group by playing bass guitar.

Howie Mandel also enjoyed the performance, laughing about the false ending and saying that even members of the production crew appeared ready to start packing away equipment before realizing the song was continuing.

Sofia Vergara offered equally strong praise, calling the audition “perfect” and predicting that viewers across America would quickly embrace the family’s charm and musical chemistry.

Simon Cowell, however, offered a more measured assessment.

While acknowledging that the trio was highly likable and that audiences would naturally enjoy watching them, Cowell argued that their song choice and arrangement felt too comfortable for a competition like America’s Got Talent.

He described the audition as “a very safe, nice audition,” explaining that relying on a beloved classic carries its own risk because it does little to distinguish performers from others.

Cowell encouraged The Sound to think more creatively if they advance to the next stage. Rather than performing another traditional country standard, he suggested choosing a song from a completely different genre and reinventing it with a country sound. Such an approach, he said, would allow the trio to demonstrate not only their vocal ability but also their originality and artistic identity.

His advice reflects a common theme throughout America’s Got Talent, where technical skill is only part of what judges evaluate. Contestants are also expected to surprise audiences, reinterpret familiar material, and show growth as the competition progresses.

The Sound’s audition successfully introduced viewers to a talented family group with polished harmonies and genuine stage presence. Their performance proved they have strong musical foundations, but Cowell’s comments suggest that advancing further may depend on their willingness to move beyond familiar territory and present something audiences have not heard before.
