Shawn Hatosy Breaks Silence On The Pitt Season 3 And Reveals Why The Hit Series Changed Everything

Shawn Hatosy says the success of The Pitt continues to feel unlike anything he has experienced during his decades-long career. As production moves forward on Season 3, the actor recently reflected on his latest Emmy nomination, the show’s growing cultural impact, and how balancing acting with directing has expanded his creative perspective.

Interview: Shawn Hatosy Talks The Pitt Season 3, Emmy Nomination, Directing & Dr. Jack Abbot - Awards Buzz

Hatosy portrays Dr. Jack Abbot, one of the senior physicians working in the emergency department at the center of HBO Max’s acclaimed medical drama. Throughout the series, Dr. Abbot has been depicted as a calm and experienced doctor who guides younger colleagues while quietly carrying the emotional weight that comes with years of treating critically ill patients.

His performance earned widespread recognition during the show’s first season, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor. This year, Hatosy has returned to the awards race with a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his work in Season 2, reflecting the expanded role his character has played as the series has developed.

Looking back on last year’s Emmy victory, Hatosy admitted the experience was overwhelming. He recalled sitting through nearly the entire ceremony waiting for the Guest Actor category, unsure whether his name would be called. When filmmaker Ron Howard announced him as the winner, the moment felt almost surreal.

After delivering his acceptance speech, Hatosy said he barely had time to process what had happened before being ushered into a series of interviews. Rather than celebrating immediately, he remembered simply wanting to reunite with his wife and close friends to absorb the significance of the award.

Despite receiving one of television’s highest honors, Hatosy said the recognition has not changed the way he approaches his career.

Instead of feeling that he has finally “made it,” he explained that he still considers himself someone who has to keep working hard for every opportunity. Maintaining that mindset, he believes, helps him stay motivated and continue improving as both an actor and filmmaker.

While the Emmy was personally meaningful, Hatosy emphasized that the broader success of The Pitt has become even more rewarding.

He explained that the series has achieved something beyond critical acclaim or strong viewership. According to Hatosy, the show’s realistic portrayal of emergency medicine has sparked conversations about the challenges facing healthcare professionals and has even inspired some viewers to consider careers in nursing and medicine.

For him, contributing to a series that resonates with both audiences and healthcare workers has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of his career.

Hatosy also expressed pride in the large number of cast members recognized by the Television Academy this year. With thirteen performers from The Pitt receiving Emmy nominations, he described the achievement as a celebration of the show’s ensemble rather than individual accomplishments.

He has long believed that great television depends on strong ensemble acting, and seeing so many of his colleagues honored reinforced that belief.

Among those recognized alongside him were Patrick Ball and Gerran Howell, who were also nominated in the Supporting Actor category. Hatosy said he was proud to share the recognition with actors he works closely with every day.

Beyond acting, Hatosy has taken on directing responsibilities during the series, giving him an opportunity to contribute from behind the camera as well.

He explained that directing allows him to observe performances from a broader perspective, helping shape scenes while collaborating with fellow actors to make each moment feel authentic. Watching cast members grow from Season 1 through the production of Season 3 has been especially rewarding, both professionally and personally.

Hatosy’s career has included memorable roles in films such as The Faculty and television series including Southland and Animal Kingdom. However, he suggested that The Pitt occupies a unique place in his filmography because of its combination of critical recognition, audience engagement, and real-world impact.

As filming continues on Season 3, Hatosy remains focused on portraying Dr. Jack Abbot with the same emotional honesty that has made the character a fan favorite. His latest Emmy nomination reflects not only his individual performance but also the collaborative work of a cast that continues to earn praise for bringing the fast-paced world of emergency medicine to life.
