House of the Dragon Season 3 continues to shift its focus from battlefield victories to the difficult realities of governing in Episode 3. After securing King’s Landing, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen discovers that claiming the Iron Throne is far easier than maintaining control over a divided kingdom struggling with political instability, financial problems, and lingering threats.
The episode opens with Daemon Targaryen confronting Lord Ormund Hightower alongside three dragons. With Rhaenyra now occupying the Iron Throne, Daemon offers peace if Ormund and his forces swear loyalty to the new queen. Although Ormund reluctantly bends the knee, Daemon insists on taking young Daeron Targaryen into custody, viewing him as a potential rival because of his royal bloodline. The decision immediately highlights the ongoing tension between mercy and security that will define Rhaenyra’s reign.
Back in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra reflects on the quieter days of her father King Viserys’ rule, remembering a time before the civil war tore the Targaryen family apart. Her personal grief contrasts sharply with Daemon’s more aggressive approach, as he argues that their enemies should have been eliminated rather than spared.
The practical challenges of ruling quickly begin to mount. One of Rhaenyra’s first discoveries is that the royal treasury has largely disappeared due to earlier financial decisions made by Tyland Lannister. Without sufficient funds, her plans for a grand public coronation become unrealistic. Mysaria, now serving as Mistress of Whispers, advises that spending lavishly while many citizens face hardship would damage public opinion. Instead, Rhaenyra orders ravens sent across the realm requesting financial support from the great houses.
Military concerns also remain unresolved. Neither Prince Aemond nor the wild dragon Sheepstealer can be located, prompting Rhaenyra to announce rewards for information leading to their capture. She even offers Harrenhal as a reward for anyone who defeats Aemond, demonstrating how determined she is to remove one of her greatest remaining threats.
Another emotional confrontation follows when Rhaenyra visits Alicent Hightower and Queen Helaena, who are being held as prisoners. Hoping to uncover the missing royal treasury, Rhaenyra questions Alicent, but receives no useful answers. Their heated exchange reflects years of mistrust and grief on both sides. Alicent argues that she is unfairly blamed for decisions largely made by powerful men around her, while Rhaenyra remains unconvinced. Despite their conflict, Rhaenyra promises they will be treated respectfully until Aemond’s fate is decided.
The episode also explores Rhaenyra’s internal conflict over Daeron. Although Daemon believes executing him would eliminate a future challenge, Rhaenyra hesitates because he is still her half-brother and has committed no personal offense against her. Memories of her own children, however, continue to shape her decisions as queen.
The episode concludes with yet another obstacle. Seeking religious legitimacy, Rhaenyra approaches the High Septon about an official anointing ceremony. He refuses, explaining that without definitive proof of King Aegon’s death, the Faith of the Seven cannot recognize her rule. His rejection reminds Rhaenyra that military victory alone cannot secure every source of political authority.
Rather than focusing on large-scale battles, Episode 3 examines the burdens of leadership, showing that every decision Rhaenyra makes now carries political, personal, and moral consequences as she attempts to unite a fractured kingdom.
