Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone marked a major turning point for the hit Western drama, but fans have continued to wonder whether John Dutton could ever return to the franchise. With Luke Grimes now leading the next chapter through Marshals, however, a reunion with Costner appears increasingly unlikely.
When Yellowstone premiered in 2018, Costner’s presence helped establish the series as a major television event. The Oscar-winning actor portrayed John Dutton III, the formidable patriarch determined to protect his sprawling Montana ranch and preserve his family’s legacy.
The show’s popularity grew dramatically during its run. Season 5’s premiere attracted nearly 16 million viewers, making Yellowstone the most-watched television program across all networks in 2022. Its series finale also delivered impressive numbers, drawing 11.4 million same-day viewers and reaching 13.1 million within three days.
Given the show’s success, Costner’s sudden departure during Season 5 came as a major shock. His exit also raised questions about how the franchise could move forward without the character who had anchored its central story.
Luke Grimes Addresses the Possibility of John Dutton Returning
Although John Dutton was ultimately killed off in the second half of Season 5, some viewers have held out hope that Costner might reprise the role through flashbacks or another appearance.
Grimes, who plays John’s son Kayce Dutton, recently addressed the possibility in an interview with USA Today. While he was open to the idea, he acknowledged that a return did not appear to be in the works.
“I think it would be cool [to have him come back]. I doubt that will happen at this point. I don’t know,” Grimes said.
He also suggested that a flashback involving Kayce’s late wife, Monica, might carry greater emotional weight for his character than one featuring John.
“If there was a flashback, I’d probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that would be more poignant to the character. But we’ll see. There’s been no conversation, but we’ll see,” he added.
Grimes’ comments suggest that, while the door may not be completely closed, there are currently no concrete plans for Costner to return.
Marshals Gives Luke Grimes a Chance to Lead the Franchise

Rather than allowing Costner’s departure to halt the franchise’s momentum, creator Taylor Sheridan has continued expanding the Yellowstone universe through spin-offs and new stories.
One of the most significant developments is Marshals, which brings Grimes back as Kayce Dutton and places him at the center of the next chapter. With John no longer part of the present-day story, the series gives Kayce an opportunity to establish his own identity and carry the franchise forward.
During Yellowstone’s original run, Costner’s star power and commanding portrayal of John often dominated the conversation. Marshals shifts that focus toward Kayce, allowing the character’s personal struggles and future to take center stage.
The franchise’s continued expansion also demonstrates that Sheridan is willing to explore stories beyond the original Dutton family conflict, even as audiences remain attached to the characters who made the flagship series successful.
Why Kevin Costner Left Yellowstone

Costner’s departure became a major talking point before Season 5 had even premiered. With John Dutton’s storyline still unfinished, fans were left wondering what had happened behind the scenes.
Sheridan expressed disappointment over the actor’s exit in a 2023 interview with The Pioneer Woman, particularly because it affected the conclusion originally envisioned for John.
“I’m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it,” Sheridan said.
At the time, much of the speculation focused on Costner’s desire to concentrate on his ambitious Horizon film saga. However, Costner later offered a more detailed account of the dispute, arguing that the situation was more complicated than the public narrative suggested.
In a 2024 interview with Deadline, the actor said his original agreement covered Seasons 5, 6, and 7. After months of negotiations, the arrangement was restructured around Season 5A and Season 5B, with the possibility of a sixth season.
Costner also said repeated changes to the production schedule created conflicts with Horizon, despite Yellowstone having contractual priority.
“I haven’t felt good about it the last year, what with the way they’ve talked about it,” he told Deadline. “It wasn’t truthful. So now I’m talking about a little bit about what the real truth of it was.”
The disagreement ultimately contributed to Costner’s departure, leaving the series to resolve John Dutton’s story without the actor who had defined the role.
Is Kevin Costner Finished With the Yellowstone Universe?

For now, a return appears unlikely. Grimes has expressed interest in the idea but confirmed that no discussions have taken place, while Marshals is moving forward with Kayce as its central figure.
A flashback could theoretically offer a way to bring Costner back without undoing John Dutton’s death, but even that remains speculative. Grimes’ preference for a more emotionally meaningful scene involving Monica also suggests that any return would need to serve Kayce’s story rather than simply rely on nostalgia.
Costner’s departure remains one of the defining controversies in Yellowstone’s history. Yet with Sheridan continuing to develop the franchise and Marshals giving Grimes a leading role, the future of the Dutton universe appears to be moving forward without John Dutton at its center.
