For Kenny Loggins, the title of his 1991 album Leap of Faith came from a moment of uncertainty — and an unlikely source: Indiana Jones.

The Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter recently explained the personal circumstances behind the album during a Sept. 17 conversation at the Grammy Museum, held after a screening of his documentary Kenny Loggins: Conviction of the Heart.

Looking back at the making of the record, Loggins, 78, recalled that his future with Columbia Records was uncertain. He said the label was preparing to drop him, forcing him to look inward and determine what he truly needed to say through his music.

He described the album as potentially his last chance, making the creative process especially significant.

The title eventually came from a scene in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the movie, Indiana Jones must step onto a seemingly invisible bridge, relying on faith to move forward.

Loggins said that image stayed with him while he was writing the album. The phrase Leap of faith became the title that captured what he was experiencing at the time.

Released in 1991, Leap of Faith became Loggins’ seventh studio album and arrived during a major transition in his personal life as well. It was his first album following his divorce from Eva Ein, with whom he shares three children: Crosby, Cody and Lou. He also has two children, Hana and Lukas, with his second ex-wife, Julia Cooper.

The album was not the only part of Loggins’ story revisited during the Grammy Museum event.

The singer also discussed the making of Kenny Loggins: Conviction of the Heart, a documentary exploring his creative process, family relationships and decades-long career.

Loggins said he initially had little interest in turning his life into a documentary. What ultimately stayed with him was the idea that, if his story were ever put on film, it needed to be truthful.

He explained that throughout his career, he had tried to write from a place of honesty — even when the relationships described in his songs were fictional.

The documentary had its world premiere on April 27, 2026, during the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto. It is also scheduled to open the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame Music Documentary Film Festival on Friday, Sept. 25.

The Grammy Museum appearance also came shortly after another personal milestone for Loggins. During the event, he revealed that he had recently eloped with his longtime girlfriend, Lisa Hawkins.

Together, the stories surrounding the documentary and Leap of Faith offer a closer look at the musician’s creative philosophy — particularly his long-standing belief that even fictional songwriting should contain a thread of truth.
