Adam Levine had a plan when Amanda Mikkel walked onto The Voice stage, and he did not waste his one chance to use it.

The 31-year-old singer from Dayton, Ohio, now living in Los Angeles, earned a four-chair turn during Wednesday’s Blind Auditions with a soft and soulful performance of Andy Williams’ “Moon River.”

Levine was the first coach to turn, followed by Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah and Riley Green. But instead of simply trying to convince Mikkel to join his team, Levine pulled out The Voice’s new First-In Button.

The rule allows the coach who turns first to use the button once during the entire season. When Levine pressed it, he immediately secured Mikkel for Team Adam.

“Well, Amanda, I turned around — first!” Levine joked before praising her voice.

“You have the purity and the luxury actually of just a beautiful voice,” he told her. “No matter what you’re singing, it’s gonna be beautiful.”

Mikkel’s performance was even more meaningful after she revealed what she had gone through to pursue music.

Before taking the stage, she explained that she had spent the past year and a half living in her car because of the high cost of living in Los Angeles. She kept her belongings in storage and carried only what she needed while working several jobs, including as a makeup assistant and production assistant.

“I am ready and willing to do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true,” Mikkel said.

Her story immediately connected with Clarkson, who revealed that she had also slept in her car while trying to build her career.

“You’re willing to do that to make that dream happen,” Clarkson told Mikkel. “Your voice is unlike other voices. You are special.”

The other coaches were just as impressed.

Latifah called Mikkel’s voice “gorgeous,” while Green said her performance did not feel like an audition.

“It felt like a performance,” he said.

Levine also pointed to something he believed could not simply be taught.

“When the room kinda stops, that’s a quality you just can’t coach,” he said.

With all four coaches interested, Mikkel had plenty of options. But Levine’s First-In Button ended the competition before the other coaches could make their final pitches.

Clarkson could only laugh at the move.

“I can’t stand you right now!” she told Levine.

The twist worked exactly as Levine hoped. Mikkel later revealed backstage that Levine would have been her choice for a coach anyway, making his decision to save the First-In Button for her four-chair turn even more timely.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and streams the following day on Peacock.
