The investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death has taken a new turn after the Drug Enforcement Administration reportedly joined authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the actress’ passing.

The DEA is now assisting the Greenville City Police Department in South Carolina, according to multiple reports. Greenville police remain the lead agency investigating the case, while the local coroner’s office is also conducting its own examination.

ABC News reported Wednesday that the DEA had become involved in the investigation. TMZ similarly reported that federal authorities are assisting with parallel investigations into Panettiere’s death.

Representatives for the DEA, Greenville police and Panettiere did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

What happened at the scene?

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a private residence in Greenville on Sunday. She was 36.

According to a police report, an officer responded to an EMS call involving an unresponsive person. When officers arrived, Panettiere was reportedly with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach.

The report stated that it was unclear whether Panettiere had consumed drugs or alcohol before she became unresponsive.

Hickerson reportedly showed officers a bag containing medications that Panettiere had been taking.

Emergency responders attempted to revive the actress, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cause of death remains unknown

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not yet determined an official cause or manner of death.

Officials said the results remain pending as additional investigation and medical studies are completed.

However, dispatch recordings reviewed by several outlets reportedly included references to a possible overdose when emergency services were called to the residence.

Those reports have not been confirmed as an official cause of death, and authorities have not announced that Panettiere died from an overdose.

The DEA’s involvement adds another layer to an already closely watched investigation, but it does not by itself establish what caused the actress’ death or indicate that anyone has been accused of wrongdoing.

Panettiere’s family remembers her

Panettiere was best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville, the Scream franchise and Remember the Titans. She began acting as a child and built a career spanning television and film.

Her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, confirmed her death in a statement shared Sunday.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her.”

Panettiere leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with her former fiancé, professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

For now, investigators have not released a final explanation for her death. The official cause and manner remain pending as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the actress’ final hours.
