American Idol’s Breanna Nix reveals how a near-death experience made her stronger and led her closer to God

Breanna Nix, a fan-favorite from a recent season of American Idol, shared a powerful testimony during a recent podcast interview in Louisiana, detailing the challenges and triumphs of her journey on the show, where she quickly became known for her authentic faith and worship-leading style.

Shining a Light: An Authentic Testimony

The podcast host praised Nix for her genuine presence on the show, noting that Breanna was a “light” who didn’t hold back on her testimony. This was especially significant given past instances where singing a worship song on Idol sometimes marked the end of a contestant’s run.

Nix humbly reflected on her calling: “We’re all made to worship. That’s literally what our duty is as Christians, right? To worship the Father.”

She recounted a pivotal moment before her audition: “I just closed my eyes and I was like, ‘God, if this is what you have for my life, I will get a golden ticket. But Lord, I will put you first before anything.’ And I feel like that’s what… made me go as far as I did because God’s favor is what I really feel it was honestly.”

The Foundation: The Best Advice

When asked for the best piece of advice she had ever received, Nix recalled a conversation with her pastor before she got married. He used the blueprint of the church to explain the importance of a solid base.

“He’s like, ‘It’s beautiful. Everything looks amazing. He’s like, but what holds this up is the foundation… And without the foundation, everything will crumble. Everything will break,'” Nix shared. Her takeaway remains that God needs to be the center of everything in both her personal life and her marriage.

The Unlikely Audition: ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’

Nix’s journey to the audition room was almost accidental. She and her husband began posting music on social media out of a “burden” to share their ministry outside the church. After a car accident left her bedridden, a sudden urge prompted her to submit a bad-lighting TikTok video of herself singing “In Jesus Name” to the Idol tryout page.

She quickly forgot about the submission until an email arrived with the subject: “Congratulations Breanna. We liked your audition tape.”

Despite missing initial Zoom audition dates, she finally got her chance. When the producer requested a Carrie Underwood song, Nix chose “Jesus Take the Wheel,” a choice that proved serendipitous. “That song went right with what I was just experiencing,” she noted, realizing the song—about a car crash—mirrored her own recent trauma. “It turned into like a ministry song really in my perspective. And I was like, ‘Take it over, Jesus.'”

More Than ‘Just a Stay-at-Home Mom’

One of Nix’s most memorable on-screen moments came when judge Carrie Underwood rebuked her response to a simple question. When asked about her occupation, Nix answered, “I’m just a stay-at-home mom.”

Underwood immediately fired back, “You are not just a stay-at-home mom!”

Nix revealed that she “100% felt an insecurity” in that moment, fueled by internal struggles and the external discouragement of her church leadership, who had initially advised her against pursuing the show.

She credits Underwood’s words with transforming her perspective: “Little did I know that that moment, God was going to use Carrie honestly to just speak life into me. And that’s literally what carried me through the whole way.”

Nix concluded with a strong message of conviction: “When God tells you to do something, that’s because he has a calling on your life, and your calling on your life is not going to match everybody else’s opinion.” She asserted that while the cameras showed her performances, the real ministry happened in the small, unseen conversations she had with fellow contestants.
