Tim Curry Quietly Rebuilt His Career After a Health Scare That Nearly Silenced Him

A Career That Refused to Fade

Tim Curry, who died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 25 at age 80, spent his final years proving that a devastating health setback didn’t have to mean the end of a legendary career. His longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, confirmed his passing on Wednesday, August 26.

Curry largely stepped away from live action acting after suffering a major stroke in 2012, a moment that could have marked the quiet end of his on screen presence. Instead, he found new life behind the microphone, becoming a prolific voice actor in animated projects including Phineas and Ferb, Young Justice, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Over the Garden Wall.

A Surprise Return to the Spotlight

Despite stepping back from traditional acting, Curry made a notable public return more than eight months before his death, appearing in Anaheim, California, on November 2, 2025, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He joined original costars Patricia Quinn, Barry Bostwick and Nell Campbell for the milestone event honoring the film that launched his career.

Weeks earlier, on October 15, 2025, Curry had also appeared at a Grammy Museum celebration honoring the film’s iconic music, posing alongside composer David Foster, producer Lou Adler, musician Fat Mike and David Gorman. Taking the stage that night to enthusiastic applause, he greeted the crowd warmly, joking about the surreal nature of the moment.

Reflecting on a Legendary Career

In one of his final interviews, given in February as part of a career retrospective for the Academy Museum’s Margaret Herrick Library, Curry looked back on decades of work spanning Rocky Horror, Legend, Annie, Clue, Muppet Treasure Island, Home Alone 2, FernGully: The Last Rainforest and the horror miniseries IT.

He also shared vivid memories of watching Rocky Horror’s cult following take shape in New York City, recalling the experience of being recognized by fans outside the Waverly Theater, where he once had to show a theater manager his passport to prove his own identity.

Asked about the film reaching its 50th anniversary, Curry reflected candidly. “It makes me feel very old, which of course I am, but it’s a benchmark,” he said.
