Dolly Parton’s selflessness reportedly extended all the way to her final days, according to a touching tribute shared by her sister, Stella Parton. Stella, one of Dolly’s 11 siblings, revealed that the country icon had volunteered to test an experimental cancer treatment on herself, hoping it might one day help future patients, even if it offered no benefit to her own outcome.

Parton died on August 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.

A Sister’s Heartfelt Tribute

Stella shared the news in a Facebook post two days after Dolly’s passing, writing that her sister had “gotten her wings” and describing her as someone who was “showing out big time, in all her sparkles and shine.”

She went on to reveal the depth of Dolly’s generosity, even in her final chapter. “She told me recently that if there was no hope for her, she would still allow her medical team to try experimental drugs in the hope of helping others in the future,” Stella wrote, adding that her sister was “always thinking of others.”

Stella encouraged fans hoping to honor Dolly’s memory to follow her example by showing more kindness and giving more of their time and resources to others, just as Dolly did until the very end.

A Weekly Tradition the Sisters Shared

Beyond the tribute to her sister’s generosity, Stella also reflected on the simple traditions that defined their relationship. For years, the two kept a standing Tuesday morning coffee call, catching up on life and swapping stories. Stella recalled one of Dolly’s favorite lines from those calls: “Shoot Tedda, we get more work done before the sun comes up than most folks do all day long!”

Stella said those Tuesday mornings will never be the same, but that her sister’s “love, respect and goodness” will remain.

A Life Defined by Kindness

Stella closed her tribute by describing how Dolly approached the world with unwavering optimism, recalling moments when she herself would grow frustrated with the state of the world, only for Dolly to brush it off with humor. “She left the world a better place by being in it,” Stella wrote, “so let’s follow her example.”

A Legacy of Giving

Parton was surrounded by family at the time of her death at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. In an official statement, her family described her lifelong commitment to spreading joy and generosity, noting her impact through initiatives like her Imagination Library, which has donated hundreds of millions of books to children, as well as her funding of research tied to a lifesaving vaccine used worldwide.

Dolly Parton will be laid to rest in Nashville in a private family ceremony, in accordance with her wishes.
