Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Dies at 78, Just Months After Announcing He Was Cancer-Free
Sam Neill, the beloved star of “Jurassic Park,” has died at age 78, his family confirmed on Monday — a loss made all the more shocking by the fact that he had recently overcome a years-long battle with cancer.
A Sudden and Unexpected Passing
Neill’s family announced his death via Instagram, writing that “it is with immense sadness that the whānau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia.” They said he “was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” adding that “the loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
The family also thanked the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care, and asked for privacy while they process “this immeasurable loss.”

A Cancer Battle He Had Just Won
The news arrives only two months after Neill revealed he had beaten angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma he had quietly fought for years. He had described relying on chemotherapy just to stay alive, before doctors told him the treatment had stopped working. Facing a grim outlook, he entered a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy, an immunotherapy that reprograms the body’s own cells to attack cancer.
The results stunned even him. He said a recent scan showed no cancer left in his body, calling it an “extraordinary thing” and adding that he was excited enough to consider returning to acting. Throughout his illness, Neill maintained he wasn’t afraid of dying, saying in 2023 that he knew he had the disease but simply wasn’t interested in dwelling on it.

A Career That Spanned Five Decades
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947 and raised in New Zealand from age seven, Neill built one of the most enduring careers in film and television, amassing more than 150 acting credits. He became a household name as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park,” a role he reprised in two sequels, most recently 2022’s “Jurassic World: Dominion.”

His breakout came in 1977 with “Sleeping Dogs,” the first New Zealand film ever released in U.S. theaters. He went on to star opposite Nicole Kidman in “Dead Calm,” earned a Saturn Award nomination for “Memoirs of an Invisible Man,” and won over a new generation of fans as Inspector Chester Campbell in the BAFTA-winning “Peaky Blinders.” He had a role already filmed for the upcoming “Godzilla X Kong: Supernova,” due out in 2027.

Tributes Pour In
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute on X, saying Neill would be “mourned and long remembered,” and praising the actor as someone who “fought illness with the same dignity, humor and conviction that gave strength to his every performance.”
Fans around the world are now remembering an actor whose warmth on screen matched the grace with which he faced his final years.
