It’s only been a week since the season 2 finale of the HBO Max series The Pitt, and fans are already missing the nail-biting drama.
As the final hour of a shift over the July 4 holiday came to a close in the episode, viewers watched as Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) contemplated her next step after her residency. She’s had some disillusionment in the past about the kind of care she can provide to her patients, and the finale also saw her balancing work and her relationship with her mother.
Then, a heart-to-heart with Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) comes into play.
“I thought I would be married with two kids in college by now,” Dr. Robby tells her, per a recap from Entertainment Weekly. “Maybe have some property with a pond. We can play hockey on it in the wintertime. And yet look at me now. No wife, no kids, no pond.”
“It’s never too late,” she replied.
The conversation clearly had a lasting impact on Dr. Mohan. The last scene she’s in shows her watching the Fourth of July fireworks with her fellow residents—and it turns out that’ll be the last time she appears on The Pitt. That’s because on April 3, Variety announced that Supriya had left the show ahead of the upcoming season 3.
So, why did Supriya Ganesh leave The Pitt? Noah is speaking out about the surprise casting news, and the answer is definitely unexpected.
When Noah spoke to Variety at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on April 12, he said her departure made some sense, given how it’s an ensemble drama that’s based within the confines of a hospital emergency room.
“It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically,” he said at the time. “Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh.”
Noah also acknowledged just how much he enjoyed having Supriya on The Pitt.
“Obviously, Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning,” he added. “And I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors. We’re going to miss her.”
While the actress hasn’t spoken directly about leaving the show, she has shared her hopes for Dr. Mohan.
“I hope [Samira] goes somewhere where she has an attending that thinks she’s fit to be in the ER,” she told JoySauce. “It’s been really interesting thinking about how different her experience of the ER might have been if she had a different attending.”
