Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 places Maggie Sullivan at the center of one of the show’s most emotional storylines yet, forcing her to choose between the man she loves and a husband from her past whose unexpected return changes everything. As viewers watched the complicated romance unfold, series star Morgan Kohan admitted that bringing the love triangle to life came with more pressure than any previous season.
The latest season picks up after the shocking Season 3 finale, when Liam unexpectedly appears and reveals that he is still legally married to Maggie. His arrival immediately complicates Maggie’s relationship with Cal Jones, the longtime love interest who has stood beside her through years of personal and professional challenges.
Rather than portraying Liam as a clear villain, the series introduces him as a charismatic and genuinely likable character. That decision makes Maggie’s dilemma far more believable, as viewers can understand why she struggles to reconcile her unresolved past while trying to build a future with Cal.

Speaking about the storyline, Kohan said one of her biggest concerns was making both relationships feel authentic.
She explained that a successful love triangle depends on the audience believing either relationship could realistically work. Since Marcus Rosner, who plays Liam, joined the central storyline, Kohan hoped their on-screen chemistry would convince viewers of Maggie’s emotional conflict.
Fortunately, she already knew Rosner before filming began, although that familiarity created its own challenge.
The actress admitted she was initially unsure how their friendship would translate into a romantic storyline on screen. While she never doubted Rosner’s charm, she hoped their performances together would naturally develop into a believable relationship rather than feeling forced.

One particular sequence caused Kohan more anxiety than any other during production.
She revealed that the basement scene, in which Maggie finally kisses Liam, was the moment she felt the greatest responsibility to get right. Because that scene dramatically shifts the direction of the season, she believed the emotional payoff had to feel fully earned rather than rushed.
According to Kohan, finding the right balance was essential. She wanted Maggie’s decision to make sense emotionally without pushing the performance too hard, describing it as one of the most delicate acting challenges she faced throughout the season.
While Maggie’s connection with Liam grows stronger, her relationship with Cal also reaches one of its lowest points.
Their emotional breakup becomes another major turning point, and Kohan praised longtime co-star Chad Michael Murray for creating an environment built on trust after working together for several years.
She explained that their growing friendship off-screen has strengthened their performances together, allowing them to tackle emotionally demanding scenes with greater confidence. Knowing they fully support each other as actors made filming difficult moments much easier.

Despite Maggie’s renewed connection with Liam, the season ultimately brings her back to Cal.
After resolving her marriage to Liam through divorce, Maggie recommits herself to the relationship she truly wants. The season finale ends with Cal proposing, even though Maggie’s divorce has only recently been finalized.
Although viewers are left waiting to hear Maggie’s official response, Kohan believes her character had already made her choice long before the proposal.
She explained that once the situation with Liam had been resolved, Maggie became completely focused on building a future with Cal. From her perspective, Maggie was emotionally ready to accept whatever came next in their relationship.
The romantic storyline has already set the stage for Season 5, which has officially been renewed.
Looking ahead, Kohan hopes future episodes will broaden Maggie’s journey beyond romance. After several seasons centered on family relationships and romantic conflict, she would like to see the series explore friendships in greater depth.

She suggested that friendship conflicts are rarely given the same attention as romantic breakups on television, even though they can be equally painful and emotionally complex. Examining those relationships, she believes, could provide a fresh direction for Maggie’s character while continuing the heartfelt storytelling that has become a hallmark of Sullivan’s Crossing.
As Season 4 arrives on Netflix for a wider audience, Maggie’s emotional journey once again proves to be the heart of the series. With unresolved questions surrounding her engagement and new opportunities for personal growth, the upcoming fifth season appears ready to continue exploring both the emotional and personal challenges that have made the character resonate with viewers.
