Logan Marshall-Green is opening up about one of Cal’s most vulnerable moments in Marshals Season 2, as the character finally tells his teammates about his cancer diagnosis. Although the confession marks a significant step forward for the usually guarded marshal, it also hints at how much his illness could change him in the episodes ahead.
Warning: Spoilers for Marshals Season 2, Episode 2 follow.
Cal Tells Kayce, Dre and Miles About His Diagnosis
In the second episode of Marshals Season 2, Cal reveals to Kayce, Dre and Miles that he has a rare form of lung cancer known as a Pancoast tumor. He explains that he has consulted a cancer specialist and can continue working until he undergoes surgery.
Cal also makes it clear that he does not want his teammates to treat him differently because of his diagnosis. However, as the group prepares to leave, Kayce stops him and assures him that they will do whatever he needs.
The conversation is an important moment for Cal, who has never been particularly comfortable sharing his personal struggles. Rather than allowing his colleagues to discover the truth from someone else, he chooses to tell them himself.
Marshall-Green acknowledged that the scene was difficult for his character, explaining that Cal struggled to find the right words to express what he was going through.

“Well, it couldn’t be easy,” the actor said, noting that Cal could not simply rely on familiar language or an easy explanation. Marshall-Green wanted the dialogue to feel as though his character was working through his thoughts in real time.
He also emphasized the importance of preserving Cal’s usual strength and leadership, even as the marshal revealed a deeply personal vulnerability.
“But he can’t lead through vulnerability. He has to lead through that, you know, muscle that he’s always had,” Marshall-Green explained.
Logan Marshall-Green Teases A Softer Side Of Cal
The confession is not only significant because Cal finally shares his diagnosis. According to Marshall-Green, it also establishes an important turning point in his character’s Season 2 journey.
As Cal begins treatment and prepares for surgery, viewers may see a different side of the traditionally tough marshal. The actor suggested that his illness will force Cal to confront two versions of himself: the man he has always been and the person he may become through this experience.
“And so there’s a lot of nuancing of that, and that’s a very important scene, I think, to also see Cal, like the two versions of Cal, the old and the new that he’s going to have to face,” he said.
Marshall-Green hopes the character’s experiences will ultimately make him more humble and emotionally open.
“He’s going to be humbled. And I hope going forward you get to see kind of this very humbled, softer Cal after treatments and surgery,” the actor added.
For a character who has long relied on strength and self-control, learning to accept support could become just as important as facing the physical challenges of cancer treatment.

Cal’s Relationships Could Face More Challenges Ahead
Although Cal’s decision to tell his teammates is a positive step, his journey is far from straightforward. His reluctance to show vulnerability could make it difficult for him to accept the help Kayce, Dre and Miles are offering.
There is also another complicated conversation waiting for him. Cal’s daughter, Maddie, is expected to have a larger role this season, and she has yet to learn about her father’s diagnosis. The fact that he did not tell her immediately could create additional tension in their relationship.

Cal’s confession therefore offers a glimpse of progress without resolving all the challenges ahead. His teammates now understand what he is facing, but he will still need to learn how to lean on the people closest to him.
Viewers can follow Cal’s next steps, including how he navigates treatment and his changing relationships, in new episodes of Marshals, which air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes are also available to stream on Paramount+.
