Ella Bright, the 19-year-old lead star of Prime Video’s new romance drama “Off Campus,” has addressed growing online debate surrounding the series’ intimate scenes and her on-screen pairing with 28-year-old co-star Belmont Cameli.
The show, adapted from Elle Kennedy’s popular college romance novels, follows the relationship between Hannah Wells (Bright), a focused music major, and Garrett Graham (Cameli), a confident hockey team captain. Since its release, the series has gained significant attention for its emotional storytelling as well as its inclusion of intimacy-driven scenes that reflect the characters’ evolving relationship.

However, alongside its popularity, “Off Campus” has also faced criticism from some viewers questioning the casting choices, particularly the nearly decade-long age gap between the two lead actors and the presence of partial nudity in the series.
Bright recently addressed these concerns during an appearance on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast, explaining that she felt fully informed and comfortable with the role from the beginning. She emphasized that her decision to take on the character was based on her connection to the story and her understanding of the script’s requirements.
“There was never a question that I wouldn’t want to do this,” Bright said, noting that she developed a strong attachment to the character of Hannah Wells early in the audition process. She added that the production environment made her feel supported and comfortable throughout filming.

Bright also pushed back on suggestions that the age difference between her and Cameli affected her experience on set. According to the actress, the cast and crew worked closely together, and she did not feel excluded or uncomfortable during production.
“We’re all such a family,” she said, describing the working environment as collaborative and professional. She also credited the production team and an intimacy coordinator for ensuring clear communication and boundaries were established before filming sensitive scenes.
The show’s creator, Louisa Levy, has also previously addressed similar concerns, stating in an interview that Bright was fully briefed on the nature of the role before signing on. Levy explained that the production team prioritized consent, preparation, and ongoing communication throughout the filming process, particularly for scenes involving intimacy.
An intimacy coordinator was involved in production to guide actors through complex scenes and ensure that all participants felt secure and informed. According to Levy, the team would not have moved forward if Bright had expressed discomfort at any stage of the process.

“Off Campus” is part of a broader trend of book-to-screen adaptations targeting young adult audiences, and its storytelling relies heavily on character-driven emotional development. The series also explores themes of trust, trauma, and personal growth, particularly through Hannah’s storyline, which includes references to a past experience of sexual assault.
Bright noted in the podcast that the differences between characters were intentionally reflected through their behavior, wardrobe, and emotional expression, helping to distinguish their personalities and life experiences on screen.
While online debate continues regarding casting and creative choices, Bright has remained focused on her performance and the reception of the series as a whole. The show has drawn a strong audience response since its release, with discussions continuing across social media platforms.
As “Off Campus” continues to stream on Prime Video, it remains both a popular romantic drama and a focal point for broader conversations about casting, on-screen intimacy, and actor preparation in modern television production.
