Taylor Dearden says one unexpected part of starring in HBO’s hit medical drama The Pitt is how rarely people recognize her in public. While many cast members from the series have become increasingly familiar faces to viewers, Dearden recently explained that her appearance on the show differs enough from her real-life look that she is often overlooked — something she admits can actually be helpful.
In a recent interview, the actress shared that her hair plays a major role in the confusion. Off-screen, Dearden usually wears her hair in a lighter honey-blonde shade, while her character Dr. Mel King appears with darker hair on the series. According to Dearden, the transformation has made it easier for her to maintain a degree of anonymity compared to some of her co-stars.
She joked that many of the actors on The Pitt resemble “glamorous versions” of their characters when attending events or walking red carpets, while she tends to look noticeably different once filming ends. Dearden even recalled moments on set where directors or crew members failed to recognize her immediately while preparing scenes.

The actress plays Dr. Mel King, one of the younger doctors working through intense emergency room cases at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The HBO drama, created by R. Scott Gemmill, follows hospital staff during a demanding 15-hour shift and has developed a strong audience thanks to its fast-paced storytelling and emotionally tense medical cases.
Dearden first appeared in the show’s debut season in 2025 and returned for season two, which continues expanding the relationships and pressures inside the trauma center. Alongside Dearden, the ensemble cast includes actors such as Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball, and Katherine LaNasa.

Although the series contains dramatic emergencies and emotionally heavy storylines, Dearden previously admitted that filming became much easier during the second season because the cast had already adjusted to the show’s demanding rhythm. She explained that during the first season, the actors were still learning how the complicated trauma scenes were supposed to function, especially with the technical medical dialogue and large ensemble blocking.
Beyond discussing her appearance, Dearden has also spoken openly about drawing from her personal experiences while developing Dr. Mel King. During a panel discussion for the series, she revealed that she identifies as being on the ADHD spectrum and used some of her own emotional experiences to shape the character’s behavior and reactions.
While the series has never officially stated that Mel has ADHD, Dearden believes there are traits within the character that reflect aspects of neurodivergence. She also discussed how growing up alongside a sibling on the autism spectrum influenced the way she interpreted Mel’s personality and emotional masking.

The actress is also notable for being the daughter of acclaimed actor Bryan Cranston and actress Robin Dearden, though she has steadily built her own career separate from her family connections. Over the last several years, she has appeared in both television and independent film projects before gaining wider recognition through The Pitt.
As the HBO series continues attracting viewers, Dearden’s understated presence off-screen may not last forever. Still, for now, she seems perfectly comfortable being one of the least recognized stars from one of television’s most talked-about dramas.
