Dutton Ranch will enter its second season under new creative leadership after the series appointed Benjamin Cavell as its new showrunner following the unexpected departure of creator Chad Feehan before the show’s premiere.

The leadership change marks one of the biggest behind-the-scenes developments for the Yellowstone spinoff, which stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Despite the production shake-up, the series became a success for Paramount+, earning positive reviews and securing a second-season renewal shortly after its debut.
Feehan’s exit came just three weeks before the series premiered on May 15. News of his dismissal became public on April 24, surprising many fans since he had created the series and overseen the production of its first season.
According to multiple reports, the decision followed concerns from several key figures involved with the franchise. Reports indicated that series stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, along with franchise creator Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios executive David Glasser, were dissatisfied with Feehan’s handling of the production after Season 1 had been completed. No additional official explanation has been provided regarding the specific reasons behind the change.

Feehan remains an established figure within Sheridan’s television universe. In addition to creating Dutton Ranch, he is also credited as a co-creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, another series connected to Sheridan’s expanding slate of projects.
Although Feehan departed before audiences saw the finished episodes, executive producer and director Christina Voros publicly acknowledged his contribution to building the world of Dutton Ranch. In an interview following the premiere, Voros praised Feehan and his writing team for creating the setting and introducing the new adversaries facing Beth and Rip in Texas.
She described his work as instrumental in establishing the show’s new environment while declining to discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure, saying she would not comment on the internal dynamics behind the decision.
For Season 2, Paramount+ has turned to Benjamin Cavell, an experienced television writer and producer with an extensive résumé in both drama and action series.

Cavell is best known as the creator or co-creator of SEAL Team, The Institute, and The Stand. He also served as a writer and co-executive producer on the acclaimed espionage drama Homeland, earning a reputation for character-driven storytelling combined with high-stakes action. His experience managing ensemble casts and serialized narratives is expected to guide Dutton Ranch into its next chapter.
The appointment comes after a strong first season that successfully expanded the Yellowstone universe beyond Montana. Following the destruction of their Montana ranch, Beth and Rip relocated to Texas, where they faced new threats ranging from land disputes to organized crime while attempting to build a new life with Carter.

Season 1 concluded with several storylines left unresolved, providing Cavell with opportunities to further develop the series while maintaining its connection to the broader Yellowstone franchise.
Production on Season 2 is expected to begin later this year. If the series follows the same timetable as its inaugural season, filming will likely start in August, with new episodes expected to premiere around May 2027.

The change in showrunner places Cavell in charge of shaping the future of one of Paramount+’s newest franchise series. While fans will be watching closely to see whether his creative approach alters the tone of Dutton Ranch, the continuation of Beth and Rip’s story remains one of the franchise’s most anticipated upcoming projects.
