Thai teenager Nene Royal made a memorable impression during her audition on America’s Got Talent Season 21, showcasing both her guitar skills and powerful vocals with a performance of The Cranberries’ classic hit, Zombie. The young musician from Phuket took the stage just one day before her 16th birthday, introducing herself to the judges with a simple ambition: to become “a superstar touring the world.”

Originally released in 1994, Zombie is one of The Cranberries’ most recognizable songs. Written by the band’s lead singer Dolores O’Riordan, the track was inspired by the 1993 Warrington bombings in England, which claimed the lives of two children during the conflict in Northern Ireland. Unlike many of the band’s melodic alternative rock songs, Zombie features heavier guitar riffs and an emotionally charged vocal performance that reflects the anger and grief behind its message. Over the years, the song has remained a staple of rock music and continues to be covered by artists around the world because of its emotional intensity and powerful lyrics.

For her AGT audition, Nene Royal delivered her own interpretation while playing an electric guitar. Rather than trying to imitate O’Riordan’s distinctive vocal style, she focused on bringing her own rock-inspired energy to the performance. She opened with confident guitar work before moving into the song’s demanding vocal sections, balancing both elements throughout the audition. Her arrangement stayed faithful to the original while allowing her musicianship to become an equal part of the performance.
Nene’s musical journey began long before stepping onto the AGT stage. She told the judges that she started learning guitar at the age of seven by watching online tutorial videos. Years of practice eventually helped her build a substantial online audience, with more than three million followers across social media platforms where she regularly shares singing and guitar performances.
Her father watched proudly from backstage as she completed her audition. Once the performance ended, the judging panel responded with enthusiastic praise.

Sofía Vergara described the audition as “spectacular” and said Nene had a strong chance of doing well in the competition. Howie Mandel praised her unexpected rock style, calling her a genuine rock star despite her young age. Mel B highlighted both her vocal ability and guitar technique, saying the combination worked perfectly together. Simon Cowell was particularly impressed by the authenticity of her voice, adding that even the less polished moments made the performance feel more genuine and engaging.
The judges unanimously voted to send Nene through to the next round, earning her four yeses and continuing her journey in the competition.
Although it remains to be seen how far she will advance in Season 21, her audition demonstrated more than technical ability. By taking on a song as iconic and vocally demanding as Zombie, while performing live guitar throughout, Nene Royal presented herself as a versatile young artist with confidence, stage presence, and a clear passion for rock music. Her performance introduced international audiences to a rising talent from Thailand and marked an encouraging start to her America’s Got Talent experience.
