Nicola Coughlan is stepping away from the ton.
The actress announced that she is taking a step back from her beloved role as Penelope Featherington in the upcoming fifth season of Bridgerton.
In an interview published Tuesday, the 39-year-old star reflected on her departure with mixed emotions.
“It’s bittersweet,” Coughlan told E! News. “I feel like, God, I had such an epic run.”
Reflecting on the hit Netflix Regency romance series, she praised the show’s anthology-style structure that allows different characters to take center stage.
“I think that’s part of the beauty of that world is it keeps reinventing itself,” she continued. “Every season being a new story — it takes on a different guise.”

The Legacy of Lady Whistledown
Coughlan’s character famously portrayed the original Lady Whistledown, the anonymous author behind Regency London’s scandalous society papers. Under the pen name, Featherington chronicled the town’s secret romances and gossip until her identity was uncovered amid her romance with Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, at the end of Season 3.
Throughout Season 4, viewers watched Penelope struggle with the loss of her anonymity, face the real-world consequences of her words, and ultimately retire her quill to settle into married life and motherhood. However, the season finale delivered a shocking twist when a brand-new imposter stepped forward to claim the mantle, though their true identity remains under wraps.
Coughlan admitted she is completely in the dark about who the new gossip writer is.

“I told everyone and said I was her,” she joked about her past experience keeping secrets, adding that the showrunners purposely keep her out of the loop. “So they know not to tell me. But I genuinely have no clue and it’s quite nice not to know. I don’t need to know.”

Looking Ahead to Season 5
While the Derry Girls alumna does not yet know how many episodes she will appear in for Season 5—slated for release in 2027—she made it clear she is always open to returning.
“I’ll always pop back to Bridgerton if they want me,” she said. “If I can be set dressing, I’ll be there. No problem.”

The upcoming fifth season will shift its primary focus to Lady Francesca Stirling, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza, as they helm the series’ first same-gender central love story following the tragic death of Francesca’s husband, Lord John Stirling.
