More than two decades after they last shared one of music’s biggest charts, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince have achieved a remarkable milestone together once again.
2026 has become a historic year for pop music as the three defining icons of the 1980s all landed songs on the Billboard Hot 100 within the same year. It marks the first time since 2004 that all three legends have appeared on the chart during the same calendar year, underscoring the timeless influence of their music across generations.
The historic reunion began in January 2026, when Prince’s classic anthem “Purple Rain” made an unexpected return to the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 27. The resurgence followed the song’s emotional use in the finale of the hit series Stranger Things. Although the episode aired at the end of the previous year, its impact continued into 2026, driving a surge in streaming that sent the beloved track back onto the chart for the third time in its history.
The momentum continued in May, when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, returned to the Hot 100 thanks to renewed interest in his legendary hit “Billie Jean.” The song experienced a dramatic streaming boost following the global release of the biographical film Michael, starring Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, in the lead role. The movie’s success also sparked renewed popularity for several of Jackson’s other classic recordings across multiple music charts.

Just one week later, Madonna completed the trio’s historic reunion when her collaboration with rising pop star Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 74. Although the single remained on the chart for only one week, its appearance was enough to place all three legendary artists on the Hot 100 during the same year for the first time in 22 years.

The previous occurrence came in 2004, when Prince charted with “Call My Name” from his album Musicology, Madonna scored a hit with “Me Against the Music,” her collaboration with Britney Spears, and Michael Jackson briefly appeared with “One More Chance,” which spent a single week at No. 100 at the start of the year.

Had “One More Chance” failed to remain on the chart that week, fans would have had to go back even further—to 1995—to find the last year in which all three icons appeared on the Billboard Hot 100.
Even more remarkably, 1995 also marked the last time Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince all appeared on the Hot 100 during the same week.
On December 30, 1995, Prince ranked No. 100 with “Gold,” Michael Jackson held No. 57 with “You Are Not Alone,” and Madonna stood at No. 11 with “You’ll See.” Once “Gold” dropped off the chart the following week, fans would wait more than three decades to witness a similar moment.
Although the three artists dominated pop music throughout the 1980s, their chart peaks rarely aligned. One of the most memorable exceptions came in October 1987, when Michael Jackson’s “Bad,” Madonna’s “Causing a Commotion,” and Prince’s “U Got the Look” simultaneously occupied the top three positions on the Billboard Hot 100. It also remains the only period when all three artists were together inside the chart’s Top 10.

Their shared return in 2026 represents far more than an impressive statistical achievement. It serves as another powerful reminder that the music created by these three legendary performers continues to resonate with audiences decades after their original releases.
The story may not be over for Madonna, either.
Her upcoming album, Confessions II, is widely projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with expected first-week sales exceeding 100,000 units. If those projections hold true, the project would become Madonna’s 10th No. 1 album, tying Elton John for the milestone while making her one of the oldest artists ever to top the album chart.
Whether Confessions II ultimately reaches the summit or not, 2026 has already secured its place as a landmark year in music history. More than 20 years after their last shared Billboard moment, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna have once again united on the Billboard Hot 100, proving that their extraordinary legacies continue to inspire—and make history.
