From Phuket Streets to America’s Got Talent: 16-Year-Old Guitar Sensation Nene Royal Rocks the Judges with Explosive ‘Zombie’ Performance

A teenage musician from Phuket, Thailand, is proving that dreams built on dedication can reach the world’s biggest stages. Nene Royal, just 16 years old, delivered a powerful performance of The Cranberries’ iconic hit “Zombie” on America’s Got Talent, earning a standing ovation and a unanimous four yeses from the judges.

Her electrifying audition instantly showcased more than just impressive guitar skills. The judges praised her exceptional musicianship before highlighting the stage presence, confidence, and raw energy they believe define a true rock star.

For international audiences, Nene may seem like a fresh face. In Thailand, however, she’s already been building an impressive reputation for years.

The young performer has amassed more than three million followers across her social media platforms and previously appeared on the popular television show Super 10. Her growing list of achievements also includes finishing as first runner-up at the 14th Overdrive Guitar Contest in 2023, along with receiving the Outstanding Player Award at the King Power Band Competition in 2025. She has also been recognized as a Featured Artist by instrument brand Enya Music.

Nene’s musical journey began remarkably early.

She first picked up a guitar at the age of six, teaching herself by watching online videos and spending countless hours practicing alone until each chord and technique became second nature.

Long before stepping under the bright lights of America’s Got Talent, Nene was already performing for real audiences.

She regularly busked during evenings and weekends at markets around Phuket, playing with her guitar case open while surrounded by the sounds of busy food stalls, passing motorbikes, and tourists exploring the local shops.

Many people simply walked by. Others paused long enough to hear a song before continuing on their way.

Those countless street performances taught her one invaluable lesson—how to capture the attention of an audience that never planned to stop and listen. After mastering that challenge, performing in front of millions on national television became far less intimidating.

Now, with a memorable America’s Got Talent audition behind her and a place secured in the competition’s next round, Nene Royal has taken another major step toward the international music career she’s been quietly working toward since primary school.

If her latest performance is any indication, this talented teenager from Phuket may only be getting started.
