Six fan favorite contestants from past seasons of “The Voice” will return to the show for season 29, as coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend face off in the NBC series’ first “Battle of Champions.”
As previously reported, R&B and hip-hop star CeeLo Green, a coach on the first three seasons of “The Voice” and on season five, will return for a special in-season competition between past contestants. Clarkson, Levine, and Legend each get to bring back two favorite artists from their previous teams for a special Knockout rounds episode.
Those six acts will go head-to-head in sing-offs against each other, according to NBC Insider, with Green deciding the winner. The round is very consequential because “the coach with the most sing-off wins among them gets to enter the season 29 finale with two team members. So, who’s coming back?
6 Returning Artists From ‘The Voice’ Will Film on September 6
The six returning artists will film the special season 29 episode on September 6 with a live studio audience at “The Voice” soundstage in Universal City, California, according to ticketing manager 1iota.
The episode won’t air until season 29 premieres in the spring of 2026, so whoever wins will have to keep it under wraps until then. Here’s who you can look forward to returning:
‘THE VOICE’ TEAM ADAM: Season 1 Winner Javier Colon
Javier Colon, 47, will return to “The Voice” 14 years after he won the very first season with Levine as his coach. Although he signed with Universal after his win, he told BuddyTV at the time that the record deal felt like an “arranged marriage” that simply “didn’t work out.” He later signed with another label in 2014, releasing his album in 2016, per TV Insider, but that deal also fizzled.
Married with three kids and living in Connecticut, Colon still tours and records music, and even won an Emmy in June for a song he recorded for a local PSA.
‘THE VOICE’ TEAM ADAM: Season 9 Winner Jordan Smith
Smith, now 31, won “The Voice” in 2015 and is one of the show’s most successful alums. In February, the contemporary Christian artist released his sixth album, “The People’s Hymnal,” which has been nominated by the Dove Awards in the Most Inspirational Album of the Year category.
In May, Smith told TV Insider that while he wasn’t in regular contact with Levine, “there have been times and moments when we’ve interacted, and I know that he has been a supporter of mine.”
‘THE VOICE’ TEAM KELLY: Season 21 Winner Girl Named Tom
In 2021, Girl Named Tom became the first musical group to win “The Voice,” featuring the beautiful harmonies of siblings Bekah, Joshua, and Caleb Liechty. Right after competing in the upcoming All-Star Showdown, they’ll hit the road on a 14-city tour to support their new EP, “Wilder Then.”
Clarkson told them on their “Voice” finale, “It has been the most amazing thing to work with you this season. I’m so glad you picked me to be your coach… Let’s keep it going. I’m team ‘GNT-K’ forever.”
‘THE VOICE’ TEAM KELLY: Season 17 Winner Jake Hoot
Country artist Jake Hoot, 38, was born in Texas, raised in the Dominican Republic, and now lives in Tennessee, according to his bio. Married with three daughters, Hoot is regularly on the road, performing all over the U.S.
Hoot announced his upcoming return to “The Voice” via Instagram on August 30, writing, “The Voice is calling me back! I’m hitting the stage for an All-Star performance, and this time it’s a showdown you don’t want to miss. Six veteran artists. Head-to-head sing-offs. One unforgettable night.”
‘THE VOICE’ TEAM LEGEND: Season 27 Finalist RENZO
Philadelphia native Dennis Lorenzo — who goes by the stage name RENZO — climbed to the top three on 2024’s season 27, riding the wave with Legend the entire time. The 33-year-old married dad of two girls is also a science teacher and made it to the top 10 on season 16 of “American Idol” in 2018. He’ll be the only all-star brought back for season 29 who didn’t win a previous season.
Before RENZO was eliminated during the finale based on viewer votes, Legend told him, “I have absolutely loved working with you. I love your professionalism and your attention to detail. The fact that every performance you’ve given have always been better than rehearsals.”
TEAM LEGEND: Season 16 Winner Maelyn Jarmon
In 2019, Texas native Maelyn Jarmon not only became Legend’s first winner on “The Voice” during his first season on the show, but she was also the first winner with a hearing impairment, according to NBC Insider. Jarmon, 32, lost her hearing in her right ear as a child, per CTV, but told the outlet she thought of it as her “superpower.”
“I hear music differently,” she told CTV. “Sometimes if I can’t hear well enough, I focus on vibrations so it just feels very different to me.”
