Miley Cyrus is opening up about one of her final conversations with her beloved godmother, Dolly Parton, following the country music icon’s death at 80.

Cyrus shared her first public statement about Parton on Wednesday, revealing that their last conversations were centered on music and change.

“The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share,” Cyrus wrote in an emotional Instagram tribute.

She explained that some of her most meaningful memories with Parton were private moments that she intends to keep close to her heart.

“Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts,” Cyrus wrote.

The 33-year-old singer also said she knew exactly what Parton would want her to do with her grief.

“What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” Cyrus wrote. “I have an angel by my side. I always have.”

Cyrus then shared one of the most touching details of her message.

“One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis,” she revealed, adding a butterfly emoji.

The word “metamorphosis” carries a powerful meaning in the tribute, suggesting that their final conversation was about change, growth and transformation.

Cyrus ended her message by promising that she would continue trying to make her godmother proud.

“I will always love her and want to make her proud,” she wrote. “My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply.”

“We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things,” Cyrus added.

Parton died on Aug. 25 at the age of 80. Her death brought an immediate wave of grief from across the entertainment world, but her passing has been especially painful for the Cyrus family because of the extraordinary bond she shared with Miley.

The relationship began before Miley was even born.

While Billy Ray Cyrus was touring with Parton in 1992, he asked the country star to become his daughter’s godmother. Miley was born on Nov. 23 of that year, and Parton accepted the role.

Years later, Parton recalled the conversation during an appearance on Good Morning America.

“When she was born, he said, ‘You just have to be her godmother,’ and I said, ‘I accept,’” Parton remembered.

Their relationship grew far beyond a traditional godmother and goddaughter connection.

Miley and Parton performed together numerous times and appeared alongside each other in different projects. Parton also became part of Miley’s Hannah Montana world, playing a version of herself on the Disney Channel series.

They shared the stage for memorable performances, including a 2019 Grammy Awards performance of Jolene.

Miley also welcomed Parton to Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party in 2023, where the two continued to show the warmth and affection they had for each other.

Miley had previously spoken openly about how much Parton meant to her.

In 2021, she described her godmother as one of the most loved people in the world and praised the lasting impact she had made.

“She’s left this big mark on the entire world,” Cyrus said at the time.

Now, Cyrus is facing the loss of someone who had been part of her life since before she was born.

Billy Ray Cyrus has also shared his own emotional memories of Parton, remembering their time touring together and revealing that Parton recently sent him a message telling him she loved him with her whole heart.

For Miley, however, the final conversation she shared with Parton may become one of her most treasured memories.

They talked about music and metamorphosis, and now Cyrus says she will carry that conversation with her as she continues her own journey.

Parton may be gone, but her influence on Miley and the entire Cyrus family will remain.

And as Cyrus wrote, fans may continue to find Dolly in “all of the most beautiful things” she left behind.
