Queen Latifah made it clear she was ready to do whatever it took to bring a new singer to Team Queen during the second night of The Voice Season 30 Blind Auditions.
The new coach turned her chair for Alt Bloom after the singer delivered a unique version of Maren Morris’ “The Bones.” Riley Green also turned for the performance, while Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine praised Bloom from their chairs.
Clarkson pointed out how well Bloom blended different genres, while Levine praised his “amazing lower register.” Green waited before turning, saying he wanted to hear how Bloom would make the song his own.
“You made that song your own,” Green said. He praised the performance for its soul and bluesy feel, adding that he could not even place it in one genre.
Queen Latifah had no such hesitation.
“I have no one on my team that sounds like you,” she told Bloom. “You sound amazing.”
Then she took her pitch to another level.
Queen Latifah grabbed a microphone, called over two background singers and started singing directly to Bloom as she walked toward the stage.
“If you get with the Queen, she can get you the trophy,” she sang.
Bloom immediately joined in, dancing and singing along as Queen Latifah made her case.
Afterward, Bloom turned to Green and joked, “Riley you got some background singers coming out?”
Green could only laugh at the situation.
“I feel like I should say something. Cue to pyro. Turn the lights down a little bit,” he joked. “It doesn’t seem fair what just happened.”
The performance may have been playful, but it helped Queen Latifah land her singer. Bloom ultimately chose Team Queen, giving the new coach another strong addition to her team.
“My team is very complementary at this point to who I am and what my tastes are,” Queen Latifah said afterward. “Which means they can sing their asses off and they’re ready for whatever.”
Green, meanwhile, admitted he had been outmatched.
“Queen Latifah brings out background singers. The band knows the song,” he said. “It doesn’t really seem fair to me, but I didn’t have a chance after that.”
The Voice continues its Season 30 premiere week with another Blind Audition on Wednesday night on NBC.
