The Season 4 premiere of The Gilded Age leaves Marian Brook and Larry Russell facing another complicated chapter in their relationship after an intimate encounter takes an unexpected emotional turn. While Marian panics over the consequences of having sex before marriage, Larry is also left fearing that his impulsive decision may have cost him the future he wants with her.
Speaking about the premiere, Harry Richardson, who plays Larry, explained that his character deeply regrets how events unfolded. His feelings for Marian remain strong, but their history of broken trust makes the situation even more difficult.
Larry Fears He May Have Ruined His Chance to Marry Marian

In the Season 4 premiere, Marian, played by Louisa Jacobson, struggles with the social expectations placed on women after spending the night with Larry. Jacobson previously described her character as confronting the “tight constraints that are placed upon her as a woman” in society.
However, Richardson pointed out that Larry is dealing with his own fear and regret. He understands that their encounter may have damaged his chances of marrying Marian, particularly because he genuinely wants to build a life with her.
“There’s also the very real realization that he might have just ruined his future of being married to her,” Richardson explained.
The actor suggested that Larry knows he acted in the wrong order. After both characters struggled with trust issues and repeatedly questioned their relationship, Larry allowed his impulses to take over before they had properly resolved their problems.
His regret is not simply about Marian’s reaction. He also fears that his actions may have pushed her further away when he had hoped to win her back.
Does Larry Still Want to Marry Marian?

Despite their complicated history, Larry’s feelings for Marian have not disappeared.
Their relationship was already uncertain by the end of Season 3. Marian broke off their engagement several episodes before the finale, and Larry hesitated to take her back when their future together remained unclear.
Both characters had reasons to question whether they could trust each other again. They initially put off making a decision about their relationship, with Marian even claiming she had moved on from Larry before the two became intimate.
Although Larry does not openly declare his intentions before Marian leaves, Richardson confirmed that his character still wants to spend his life with her.
“He also then realizes that not only has he now hurt someone who he cares about so much, but he’s possibly lost her forever,” the actor said.
Richardson added that the realization brings Larry “a huge weight and humbling and fear”, emotions that he will continue to grapple with throughout the season.
Can Marian and Larry Overcome Their Trust Issues?

The premiere sets up another emotional obstacle for the couple. Larry’s desire to marry Marian remains clear, but their unresolved disagreements and lack of trust could make reconciliation difficult.
His actions have left him worried about losing her, while Marian must confront the consequences of their encounter within the strict social expectations of her time.
Whether they can finally repair their relationship and make it to the altar remains one of the major questions heading into Season 4.
The Gilded Age airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
