For years, Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone fueled speculation about creative disagreements and production delays. Now, series creator Taylor Sheridan has offered one of his clearest explanations yet, revealing that John Dutton’s exit was actually much closer to the original plan than many fans realized.
Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan explained that Costner was originally expected to appear for only the first three seasons of the hit Western. According to Sheridan, the long-term story had always been designed to shift the focus from John Dutton to the next generation of the family.
However, the overwhelming success of Yellowstone changed those plans.

Sheridan said the network was reluctant to lose its biggest star while the series continued to dominate television ratings. As a result, Costner remained with the show for two additional seasons, extending his role beyond the initial vision.
Rather than suggesting conflict, Sheridan described Costner as simply reaching a point where he wanted to pursue other creative projects. He recalled the actor saying he needed to “do my own thing,” emphasizing that Costner had already stayed longer than originally planned.
The explanation adds important context to Costner’s departure in 2024. At the time, reports focused heavily on scheduling issues surrounding his Horizon film series, leading many viewers to believe those conflicts alone caused his exit. Sheridan’s comments suggest the reality was more complex, with the production adapting after extending a character whose story was never intended to continue indefinitely.
John Dutton’s death during the second half of Season 5 became one of the defining moments of the series finale. While some fans were disappointed not to see more of Costner before the show concluded, Sheridan indicated that the patriarch’s death had always been essential to the larger narrative.

Without its longtime leader, Yellowstone shifted its attention to how each member of the Dutton family responded to the loss. Characters who had long depended on John’s authority were forced to make difficult decisions on their own, creating the emotional foundation for the series’ final episodes.
Luke Grimes previously echoed that perspective, noting that the family’s future without its patriarch was always where the story seemed destined to go. His comments align closely with Sheridan’s latest explanation that the baton was always meant to pass to the younger generation.
Sheridan also reflected on his overall approach to storytelling. He said he is not motivated by awards or critical recognition, explaining that his priority is creating stories that entertain audiences, make them think, and leave an emotional impact. Whether viewers laugh, feel suspense, or become invested in the characters’ struggles, that remains his measure of success.
With Yellowstone now complete and multiple spin-offs expanding the franchise, Sheridan’s latest remarks help clarify one of the show’s most discussed behind-the-scenes developments. Rather than representing an abrupt change of direction, Kevin Costner’s exit appears to have been the conclusion of a character arc that had been envisioned from the very beginning, even if its timeline ultimately stretched beyond the original plan.
