Netflix Viewers Are Falling In Love With The Dreamy Seaside Town Behind Remarkably Bright Creatures And Its Stunning Hidden Beauty

One of the most captivating elements of Netflix’s adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures is its setting. The film immerses viewers in the fictional coastal community of Sowell Bay, a place filled with quiet waterfront views, misty mornings, and the unmistakable charm of the Pacific Northwest. While Sowell Bay exists only in the story, the filmmakers found real locations that perfectly capture its atmosphere.

Based on the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt, the film follows Tova Sullivan, a widow who works night shifts at a local aquarium. Her life changes when she develops an unlikely connection with Marcellus, a remarkably intelligent giant Pacific octopus. As Marcellus begins piecing together clues about the disappearance of Tova’s son decades earlier, the story unfolds into a heartfelt exploration of grief, healing, friendship, and hope.

The role of Tova is played by Sally Field, whose performance anchors the emotional core of the film. Lewis Pullman stars as Cameron Cassmore, while Sofia Black-D’Elia portrays Avery, a local business owner. Marcellus is voiced by Alfred Molina, bringing warmth, wit, and wisdom to one of the film’s most memorable characters.

Although the story is set in Washington State, most filming took place in British Columbia, Canada. The production team used several scenic coastal communities around Vancouver to recreate the fictional town.

One of the most recognizable locations is Deep Cove Yacht Club. The marina served as the exterior location for the aquarium where Tova works. Nestled among forested mountains and calm waters, the yacht club provides many of the film’s picturesque waterfront views and plays an important role in several key scenes.

The surrounding community of Deep Cove also appears extensively throughout the film. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, kayaking culture, and beautiful shoreline, Deep Cove offers exactly the kind of small-town coastal character described in the novel. The area’s marinas, walking paths, and mountain-backed scenery help create the feeling of a close-knit community where everyone knows one another.

Another important filming location was the Vancouver Aquarium, located inside Stanley Park. Beyond providing locations for interior and underwater scenes, the aquarium played a crucial role in creating Marcellus. Visual effects artists spent significant time observing real giant Pacific octopuses housed there, studying their movements, behavior, and interactions to make the character feel authentic on screen.

Nearby coastal areas such as Lions Bay also contributed to the film’s visual identity. These rugged shorelines and dramatic ocean views reinforce the Pacific Northwest atmosphere that becomes almost a character itself throughout the story.

More than just a backdrop, the setting enhances the film’s themes of solitude, connection, and renewal. The quiet coves, mist-covered waters, and small-town warmth reflect Tova’s emotional journey and help bring the world of Remarkably Bright Creatures vividly to life. For viewers enchanted by Sowell Bay, British Columbia’s coastline offers a real-world destination that feels remarkably close to the one imagined in the story.
